The Meg hit another milestone by passing the $500 million mark worldwide ($506.6 million from $137 million US and $369.5 million internationally), which is more than it was originally thought it would do. The success of the film bring to light the question will it get a sequel, many movies doing this type of money do.
The Meg has more going for the sequel possibility than just it's box office, The Meg is based on a book by Steve Alten who has written five more books with an sixth to come down the road in The Meg series. There is a lots of material to go on so even if they weren't to follow the books exactly they still have a lot to take from. Considering The Meg is closing in on Godzilla 2014's worldwide take, and Godzilla's big following, it could be said this film deserves a sequel. The biggest drawback is some may feel shark films are "played out", but The Meg has been successful despite that, another negative is the Jaws films, the first was a major blockbuster but the sequels slowly went downhill and Hollywood seems to be getting cautious with sequels to big budget films due to a number of failures. With the success of the Monsterverse (Godzilla, Kong) franchise, Jurassic World franchise, and films like Rampage, The Meg could certainly continue the trend of success in giant monster/dino films as long as it continues with what has made it a hit so far, Alten hopes so, and we certainly hope so too. "The thing about the book series is, I just finished book 6, Meg: Generation, and each book ups the ante a little bit more. So if the producers, and [producer] Belle Avery especially I know she will follow the sequels. If they follow the sequels then they won't have to reinvent the wheel. Because it takes it to new places and introduces new monsters. A lot of people like dinosaurs, and I did, too, growing up. But the sea creature monsters and dinosaurs are much more fearsome than the land creatures. There's the T-Rex, but that is pretty much all you really have on the land. In the ocean you have some amazing sea creatures, and I'd love to see them all brought back to life." - Alten (via Cinemablend). The Meg finished second in its third weekend at the box office giving Warner Bros. it's second one, two punch two weekends in a row with Crazy Rich Asians finishing first. The two new big releases this weekend both finished poorly, Happy Time Murders (3rd), and A.X.L. (10th).
The Meg took in almost $13 million in the US to bring its domestic total to $105 million, internationally it took in $32.7 million this weekend bringing it's international total to $306.5 million. Its total take passed the $400 million mark hitting $411.5 million worldwide. Considering this is only it's third weekend there is a pretty good chance it could finish north of $500 million total. Besides the US the other big market for the film has been China where the film has taken in $143 million, the film should easily pass the $150 million mark (possibly $175 million) there alone. It will be interesting to see where it ends up with its total take. The Meg continues to perform well at the box office in its second weekend, it took in a estimated $21.15 million domestically. Internationally it also was doing well taking another $67 million this weekend. It's total US take is nearly $84 million, with the international total at $230 million, for a total worldwide of over $314 million.
The Meg finished second this weekend to Crazy Rich Asians (other WB film), but it wasn't by much about $4 million and beat the other new releases Mile 22 and Alpha. The Meg is also outperforming the two other monster films released this year, Rampage was nearly $100 million worldwide less overall at this point (although it was outperforming expectations), and Pacific Rim: Uprising never reached this point (only hitting $290 million worldwide). The Meg has also done very well in China, the second biggest market after the US, with $117.2 million there (already beating PRU there). With a budget of around $130 million (plus it's ad budget) it won't have to do a tremendous amount more to be profitable. While these numbers are estimates they shouldn't change much and we will update them once actuals are in. The Meg hit theaters this weekend and it did far better than it was was predicted, nearly double. It was expected to take in $20 - $25 million but instead took in $45.4 million. It's international take was also impressive taking in over $100 million, nearly half of that was from China the second biggest movie market.
The film beat both other monster films that came out this year, Pacific Rim: Uprising and Rampage at the US box office ($28 million, and $34.5 million, respectively). The film did slight less than those overseas but has a few more countries to open in. The film has had a number of fairly positive reviews, basically on par with the reception Rampage got when it was released. It will be interesting to see if it can hold on to the box office and continue to make money, it doesn't seem to have any major competition in the next few weeks with the next true action movie being Predator (Sept 14). Rampage is the kaiju/monster film that could and continues to do well even with it digital video release this past week. The past two weekend saw a dramatic increase in it's box office take, $923,000 the weekend of June 22 to 24 (a 244% increase from the weekend before), and $601,000 this past weekend, the week from June 22 to the 28 it did over $1.2 million (a 185% increase from the week before).
While these number may not sound earth shattering the fact that the film is going into it's 12th week, the small number of theaters showing it (under 300), and digital release happening (on June 26th), it is pretty impressive. Also take into account what it is doing per theater, both the last two weekends and last week were better per theater than it's third week of release. It's per theater take even beat Avengers: Infinity War. Where Rampage placed at the box office the last couple of weeks was impressive, it was 15th this weekend, the closest film that has been out as long was at 24th (A Quiet Place), last weekend it was 12th and 22nd respectively. Weekly placement was similar as well. Rampage is now just shy of $425 million worldwide and will be released on Blu-ray and DVD July 17th. Warner Bros. has announced the release of Rampage on home video, Digital on June 26, and 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on July 17. It will be available on 4K, Blu-ray (3D and standard), and DVD, Best Buy will have a Steelbook exclusive, no word on other exclusives. Check out the info below. Also of note Rampage has officially passed Pacific Rim's (2013) worldwide box office, it has hit nearly $414 million (almost $3 million more).

Synopsis: In 1993, a breakthrough new technology gave scientists a path to treat incurable diseases through genetic editing. In 2016, due to its potential for misuse, the U.S. Intelligence Community designated genetic editing a "Weapon of Mass Destruction and Proliferation." Johnson stars as primatologist Davis Okoye, a man who keeps people at a distance but shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, incredibly rare albino silverback gorilla who has been in his care since he rescued the young orphan from poachers. But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry mutates this gentle ape into a raging creature of enormous size. To make matters worse, it's soon discovered there are other similarly altered animals. As these newly created super creatures tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with discredited geneticist Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris) to secure an antidote, fighting his way through an ever-changing battlefield, not only to halt a global catastrophe but to save the fearsome creature that was once his friend. Technical Specs: Audio: English, Canadian French, Brazilian Portuguese Subtitles: English, Latin Spanish, Parisian French, Canadian French Rampage surpassed $90 million at the US box office officially and it is on the verge of passing $400 million worldwide, which it should do this coming weekend with it's last opening in Japan (May 18th). While some will said it's US take is nothing to write home about it's the International side that is more impressive, particularly China. As it has become increasingly obvious films do not have to have huge takes in the US to be viewed as successful, the first Pacific Rim was one that got approved for a sequel based on the $100 plus million it did in China. In the case of Rampage it's China box office is none to shabby, it currently is at nearly $155 million. To compare only Kong: Skull Island (of the recent giant monster films) was higher with $168 million, and many Marvel films failed to beat it, even Black Panther which hit only about $105 million there. China is the second biggest market behind the US so a films success there is a big deal and helps in a films bottom line and approval for sequels. $400 million is the sort of magic number for success for big blockbusters (depending on budget, promotion), Rampage falls into that category. Below is a comparison to other similar action films. China Box Office Totals (Via Box Office Mojo)
Rampage had another strong weekend outing while it finished a close second to surprise hit A Quiet Place it beat to new films. Rampage ($21 million) was only a million behind A Quiet Place and beat both Super Troopers 2 ($14.7 million), and I Feel Pretty ($16.2 million) both in their first weekend.
Rampage's drop of 41% from it's first week was better than many thought, it's US take is at $66.6 million, with it's international total at $216.4 million, for a total of $283 million. While this is positive news for Rampage it's not such good news for Pacific Rim: Uprising, the other recently released monster film. Rampage has already overtaken PRU even though it open two weeks after it. In the US Rampage is ahead by $8 million, and even though PRU has a $7 million advantage internationally Rampage is ahead by $1 million overall. What also does't help PRU is they had a home field advantage, so to speak, with China (the owners of Legendary Pictures are based there) and after a strong start the box office there has collapsed for the film and it looks like if will fall far short of the first film despite that stronger start. Critics ratings of the two films weren't far apart but fan ratings were much better for Rampage, which probably has help Rampage to stay strong at the box office (82% for Rampage vs. 47% for PRU via RT). Other issue is profit, PRU budget was $150 million while Rampage was only $120 million, even if they finished around the same total take Rampage would have the better bottom line. Legendary/Universal did more promoting of PRU too (via social media, and more merchandise tie-ins) but those didn't seem to help. The possible sequel looks very unlikely at this point for PRU. Update 4/24: Actuals have come in and PRU has edged up a little worldwide, slightly ahead of Rampage. Most of the rest posted stayed the same. Rampage opened at number one at the box office although it wasn't easy because of the surprise hit A Quiet Place. A Quiet Place surprised everyone last week with it's $50 million domestic opening weekend so it wasn't clear if Rampage would be able to beat it. Rampage opened with $34.5 million in the US about $2 million ahead of A Quiet Place,
Rampage also did well overseas with over $114 million. Rampage beat the other recent giant monster film Pacific Rim Uprising in the US by approx $6 million, although PRU gained it back and more overseas where it beat Rampage $122 million to $114 million (approx.). The two films finished very close for their first weekends (150.5 PRU to 148.5 Rampage worldwide) the big question will be can Rampage hold on to more of it audience than PRU did, Avengers Infinity War hits in less than two weeks so it will need to. Comparing the two films it does look like Rampage had the stronger competition but that could be argued, but Rampage has gone over better with audiences (81% to PRU 49% approval via Rotten Tomatoes) which can help it. We felt both films were pretty good and it was hard to truly compare them even though they are both giant monster films, they aren't a straight apple to apple type comparison. Hopefully the results will be looked at positively so we will continue to get more kaiju related films. |
