Yokai Monsters Collection Limited Edition From Arrow Video

7/30/2021

Picture
From the makers of Daimajin comes a trilogy of terror ripped from the pages of Japanese folklore, with ghosts and monsters from ancient myths and legends brought to life through stunning special effects, alongside an epic, big-budget reboot of the series from a modern-day master of the macabre, now available together on Blu-ray for the first time.

In the first film in the trilogy, 100 Monsters, a greedy slumlord’s attempts to forcefully evict his tenants invite the wrath of the titular spirits when a cleansing ritual is botched, with terrifying results. The second film, Spook Warfare, tells the tale of an evil Babylonian vampire inadvertently awoken by treasure hunters, and a brave samurai that teams with the yokai to defeat the bloodthirsty demon. In the final film, Along with Ghosts (released only 12 months after 100 Monsters), the yokai are roused to defend a young girl on the run from deadly yakuza.

Decades later, none other than Takashi Miike (Audition) helmed The Great Yokai War, a loose remake of Spook Warfare that used cutting-edge digital effects to renew the franchise for a new generation. In it, a young boy is given a grave responsibility: to band together with a group of yokai to defend humanity against a vengeful and powerful demon that has sworn retribution against modern-day Japan.

Kaiju Battle Review: The Daimajin Trilogy From Arrow Video

7/26/2021

Picture
Special Thanks to Clint Weiler MVD Entertainment Group and Arrow Video US
The Daimajin series films were released over the course of 1966 by Daiei Film, each film was basically the same plot, involving villages being overthrown by warlords, leading to the villagers attempting to reach out to Daimajin, the great demon god, to save them, done by three different directors. The films have received a few releases on video the last being by Mill Creek Entertainment in 2012, Arrow's release takes things a step further by giving the set a deluxe look.

The packaging is very good, the set of the three films on separate Blu-rays plus a 100 page collectors booklet come in a sturdy cardboard  stock case. The case features different Matt Frank art on both front and back, the top third of the case slides up to reveal a inner sleeve (second layer of cardboard stock) holding the contain within. The case has good and bad aspects, while not as elaborate as the Gamera set that Arrow also released, it does fit nicely with most video collections and does need to be stored separately. Inside the case you have the three films, each on separate Blu-rays in clear cases with each featuring a reversible cover sleeve with Matt Frank art on one side and movie poster art on the other. Each film also has a double sided postcard containing the same cover art, and there is a double sided poster containing the first films art as well, and this is where I find a slight issue, the same few pieces of art are used multiple times rather than have different artwork, it's not a big issue but still. Another issue I have is the poster as it is folded to fit within the Blu-ray case, understandable but still annoying if you want to display it. The booklet is actual pretty nice featuring new essays by Jonathan Clements, Keith Aiken, Ed Godziszewski, Raffael Coronelli, Erik Homenick, Robin Gatto and Kevin Derendorf, plus a ton of classic style Japanese art. The cover art of the book is Sumi-e style while the interior art is film like art, partly in color. The only issue with the booklet is size but this is a necessity due to the fact it needs to fit the case.

The films themselves are the meat of the collection and overall they are excellent, video quality is great both the quality of the print with little to no issues. The first film is near perfect clear and crisp with great color throughout, the other two films are nearly as good with only some very minor scratches on the print but they don't take away from the films. Sound quality is just as great balanced without any distortion, something of note of interest to fans, especially those that haven't seen these before, the music is by Akira Ifukube and has Frankenstein Conquers The World/War Of The Gargantuas vibe (at least to me). The extras are nice and there is new commentary for each film, as well as a number of other bonus items. There are those that may complain about the similar stories in each film but there are stories and these aren't strictly monster movies (Daimajin doesn't really show up till close to the films end), plus the attention to detail for the time period they take place in like the top-knot hair style of many of the men to some women having black teeth, which was a Japanese tradition known as Ohaguro, and was to signify a woman being married.

Overall the quality of the set is great, there are a few small issues but they don't take away from the set as a whole. If you don't have these films I definitely recommend getting this set, if you have a previous released copy I would still recommend it for the extras you get (note I did not compare the quality to the Mill Creek set which is the only other Blu-ray set but is on two discs and not three like this set).

Daimajin Collection - Limited Edition
Description
THE ANCIENT GOD DAIMAJIN ARISES!

The Daimajin Trilogy saw Daiei’s Kyoto studios bringing its own iconic movie monster to life in a unique but short-lived series that transplants the Golem legend to Japan’s Warring States period of the late-16th century.

In Daimajin, directed by Kimiyoshi Yasuda (Yokai Monsters, Zatoichi on the Road), the young son and daughter of the benevolent feudal lord Hanabusa flee to the mountains when their parents are slain by the treacherous usurper Odate. Ten years later, when the elderly priestess who has harbored them is also murdered, the rage of the slumbering ancient god that lies beneath the crumbling giant stone idol hidden deep in the forests in the mountains is invoked. In Return of Daimajin, Kenji Misumi (Tale of Zatoichi, Lone Wolf and Cub) brings his usual stylistic flourish, as the wrathful deity is roused from his new home on an island in the middle of a lake by the violent incursions of a vicious warlord. In the final film, Wrath of Daimajin, by veteran jidaigeki director Kazuo Mori, four young boys make a perilous trip to elicit the help of the ancient mountain god in freeing their family members who have been enslaved by a tyrannical lord.

Remarkably overlooked in the West, these three thrilling tales of feudal oppression and divine retribution meted out by the iconic stone warrior of the title combine lavish period detail with jaw-dropping special effects.

Warning From Space Coming From Arrow Video

8/11/2020

Picture
The first Japanese science fiction film to be made in colour, Koji Shima’s Warning From Space features eye-popping special effects from the same team at Daiei Studios that would bring Gamera to life a decade later.

As Japan is rocked by mysterious sightings of UFOs over Tokyo and large one-eyed aliens attempting contact, scientists collaborate to investigate the unexpected rise in extraterrestrial activity. Unbeknownst to them, one of the aliens has already assumed human form and is about to deliver a very important message… that could be humanity’s last hope for survival.

With a witty script by Hideo Oguni (screenwriter of several Akira Kurosawa classics including Seven Samurai) and iconic starfish-like aliens designed by avant-garde artist Taro Okamoto, the original Japanese version of Warning From Space finally makes its official English-language video debut.

Daily updates with TOEI TOKUSATSU Hero Series
from the 1960s to the 1990s!
To kick things off, the first two episodes of all 70 shows will be released at once (with English subtitles)!

What’s ”TOEI TOKUSATSU WORLD OFFICIAL”?
This official Toei YouTube channel will have a lineup of various shows, including “NATIONAL KID” (1960), Super Sentai Series such as “GORENGER”(1975), Metal Hero Series including “SPACE COP GAVAN”(1982), and robot anime such as “VOLTES V”(1977). Further episodes will be available in Japanese for now, but there could be frequent updates. We plan on making a public call for subtitles in any language.

WHAT'S TOKUSATSU ??
Simply translated, it means SFX, or special effects, but Japan’s “TOKUSATSU” is something different. It is its own genre in Japan, known for a filming technique that makes use of miniatures, costumes, CG, and special effects. One characteristic of the TOEI TOKUSATSU series is the heroes are life-sized. TOEI started making TOKUSATSU in the 1950s, and has since created shows that widely vary in genre and style. Some especially popular series include Kamen Rider (a.k.a. Masked Rider) and Super Sentai, first created in 1971 and 1975 respectively, and they continue to this day. The genre has since seen success outside of Japan as well. The 1992 series “ZYURANGER” was remade in America as “Power Rangers”, which became a hit there, and continues to the present. Nowadays, “TOKUSATSU” is a word that is understood all over the world! The series uploaded to this channel created the foundation of TOEI’s TOKUSATSU culture. From the strange world view of the TOEI Fushigi Comedy Series (TOEI Mysterious Comedy Series), to the heroes of the Metal Hero Series and more, we hope you enjoy the variety of TOKUSATSU culture.

Original Character: The ninja, CONTENMARU
Did you notice the ninja fox that appears at the start? That is CONTENMARU, the official character that will support our new channel. Tasked with delivering TOEI TOKUSATSU content to the world, he’ll liven up the channel! (In Japan, fox cries are expressed as “con”.) CONTENMARU’s dream is to study TOEI TOKUSATSU and someday join their ranks as a cool hero. Powered by his favorite food, onigiri (rice balls), he trains hard day after day.

Exclusive Bluray Artwork
Two giant new Kaiju are setting their sights on North America via SRS Cinema – Reigo: Kind of the Sea Monsters; and Raiga: God of the Monsters. Both will be available on limited edition Bluray and VHS exclusively at SRS Cinema, with wide release DVD’s coming in Nov. and (tentatively) Feb via MVD/SRS.

Limited Editions for both titles will be rolled out for presales starting Thurs, 7/25/19 at 7pm EST. They will be limited to 200 Blurays (but see more on that below) and 50 VHS. The movies will go to replication/duplication around 8/25 with copies expected to ship around Mid-Sept. Each physical media format – Bluray, DVD and VHS – will have artwork exclusive to that format only.

On the Blurays, please note these are professionally run BD-R’s via Discmakers. We have done over 70 limited editions BD-R’s over the past 3 years and they play as good and are as durable as pressed Blurays (studies show they last as long too). Our Bluray releases have rave reviews and 1000s of enthusiastic and vocal fans. However, we know some fans prefer pressed media, so we are proposing this – if the titles can sell out – ie all 200 units – before we go to replication, we will run fully pressed Blurays (the limited editions will then expand to 1000 units on Bluray, and that will be the max limit on these, so still very rare!). So please, pre-order/reserve your copies early and spread the word to help us achieve these goals!

REIGO: KING OF THE SEA MONSTERS – The battleship Yamato, the largest and strongest of its time, is on patrol when a lookout spots a massive shape half-submerged in the distance. Believing it to be an enemy submarine, they fire and score a direct hit. But they are shocked when the object emits a strange cry as it sinks beneath the waves.

Soon after, something much bigger arrives, the massive kaiju Reigo, seething with rage at the murder of its cub. The monster attacks the Combined Fleet with incredible ferocity and awesome destructive power. The naval forces are caught off guard, and Reigo is able to destroy the escort ships and damage the Yamato before returning to the ocean depths.

Now the stage is set for a final battle to unfold between the world’s largest battleship and the mysterious dragon-like monster – who will prevail?

RAIGA: GOD OF THE MONSTERS – Global warming leads to excessive melting of the southern polar ice cap, disrupting Earth’s ecosystem.  The receding ice brings long dormant ancient sea creatures back to life, monsters that set their sights on Japan. Among the kaiju is an enormous sea beast the locals refer to as the legendary Raiga. The monster attacks the city of Asakusa, bringing death and destruction as he tramples building and lays waste to the military. Can Raiga be stopped, or will all of Japan be destroyed by his fury?

Update: T-shirts have been added for these films on the SRS website, two types are available a video cover image on the front, and a all over print (front and back). The regular one comes in 4 colors (black, navy, white, and gray), 100% cotton, and come in sizes S to 3XL, the all over print comes in sizes XS to 2XL, and is polyester. The regular retails for $15, the all over for $36.50, use the same link above to order.

SYNOPSIS
A deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, former deep-sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is drawn out of self-imposed exile by a visionary Chinese oceanographer, Dr. Zhang (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter, Suyin (Li Bingbing), who thinks she can rescue the crew on her own. But it will take their combined efforts to save the crew, and the ocean itself, from this seemingly unstoppable threat—a prehistoric 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. Thought to be extinct, the Meg turns out to be very much alive…and on the hunt.

Five years before, Jonas had encountered this same terrifying creature, but no one had believed him. Now, teamed with Suyin, Jonas must confront his fears and risk his own life to return to the ocean depths…bringing him face-to-face once more with the apex predator of all time.

The Meg Hits $500 Million, Could A Sequel Be In The Waters?

9/17/2018

Picture
The Meg hit another milestone by passing the $500 million mark worldwide ($506.6 million from $137 million US and $369.5 million internationally), which is more than it was originally thought it would do. The success of the film bring to light the question will it get a sequel, many movies doing this type of money do.

The Meg has more going for the sequel possibility than just it's box office, The Meg is based on a book by Steve Alten who has written five more books with an sixth to come down the road in The Meg series. There is a lots of material to go on so even if they weren't to follow the books exactly they still have a lot to take from.

Considering The Meg is closing in on Godzilla 2014's worldwide take, and Godzilla's big following, it could be said this film deserves a sequel. The biggest drawback is some may feel shark films are "played out", but The Meg has been successful despite that, another negative is the Jaws films, the first was a major blockbuster but the sequels slowly went downhill and Hollywood seems to be getting cautious with sequels to big budget films due to a number of failures.

With the success of the Monsterverse (Godzilla, Kong) franchise, Jurassic World franchise, and films like Rampage, The Meg could certainly continue the trend of success in giant monster/dino films as long as it continues with what has made it a hit so far, Alten hopes so, and we certainly hope so too.

"The thing about the book series is, I just finished book 6, Meg: Generation, and each book ups the ante a little bit more. So if the producers, and [producer] Belle Avery especially I know she will follow the sequels. If they follow the sequels then they won't have to reinvent the wheel. Because it takes it to new places and introduces new monsters. A lot of people like dinosaurs, and I did, too, growing up. But the sea creature monsters and dinosaurs are much more fearsome than the land creatures. There's the T-Rex, but that is pretty much all you really have on the land. In the ocean you have some amazing sea creatures, and I'd love to see them all brought back to life." - Alten (via Cinemablend).
