The Meg hit theaters this weekend and it did far better than it was was predicted, nearly double. It was expected to take in $20 - $25 million but instead took in $45.4 million. It's international take was also impressive taking in over $100 million, nearly half of that was from China the second biggest movie market.
The film beat both other monster films that came out this year, Pacific Rim: Uprising and Rampage at the US box office ($28 million, and $34.5 million, respectively). The film did slight less than those overseas but has a few more countries to open in. The film has had a number of fairly positive reviews, basically on par with the reception Rampage got when it was released. It will be interesting to see if it can hold on to the box office and continue to make money, it doesn't seem to have any major competition in the next few weeks with the next true action movie being Predator (Sept 14).
