Rampage opened at number one at the box office although it wasn't easy because of the surprise hit A Quiet Place. A Quiet Place surprised everyone last week with it's $50 million domestic opening weekend so it wasn't clear if Rampage would be able to beat it. Rampage opened with $34.5 million in the US about $2 million ahead of A Quiet Place,
Rampage also did well overseas with over $114 million. Rampage beat the other recent giant monster film Pacific Rim Uprising in the US by approx $6 million, although PRU gained it back and more overseas where it beat Rampage $122 million to $114 million (approx.). The two films finished very close for their first weekends (150.5 PRU to 148.5 Rampage worldwide) the big question will be can Rampage hold on to more of it audience than PRU did, Avengers Infinity War hits in less than two weeks so it will need to. Comparing the two films it does look like Rampage had the stronger competition but that could be argued, but Rampage has gone over better with audiences (81% to PRU 49% approval via Rotten Tomatoes) which can help it. We felt both films were pretty good and it was hard to truly compare them even though they are both giant monster films, they aren't a straight apple to apple type comparison. Hopefully the results will be looked at positively so we will continue to get more kaiju related films.
