Tristan Eaton has a long history creating art inspired by the Universal Classic Monsters. His murals for Dracula, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and Creature from the Black Lagoon are on display on the Universal Studios back lot. Tristan is perhaps best known for his large-scale public murals, found throughout the world from New York to Paris to Shanghai, which he executes in freehand spray paint; a technical and personal nod to his own history and respect for graffiti culture, while honoring traditional painting and muralism with his thoughtful and dynamic subject matter and compositions. His work can be seen in the Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) permanent collection as well as the Cooper Hewitt Museum and Long Beach Museum of Art. In 2023, Tristan was commissioned to create new art depicting all 8 classic monster characters from Universal Pictures exclusively for this collection.

“A DEEPER LOOK” :  HOLLYWOOD’S FIRST 3-D WAVE, 1953-1954
FESTIVAL CELEBRATING 70th ANNIVERSARY OF 3-D CRAZE
SELECT SCREENINGS THROUGH NOVEMBER

Press release,
Opens August 6 and 7
With Restored 3-D Cult Classic ROBOT MONSTER

Includes Hitchcock's DIAL M FOR MURDER, Jack Arnold's CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, André De Toth's HOUSE OF WAX, New Restorations of THE DIAMOND WIZARD and I, THE JURY, and more.

Presented in Association with 3-D Film Archive

“A DEEPER LOOK”: HOLLYWOOD’S FIRST 3-D WAVE, 1953-1954, a celebration of the 70th anniversary of Hollywood’s 3-D craze of the early 1950s, will run at Film Forum, beginning with the NYC theatrical premiere of the 3-D Film Archive’s new restoration of the cult classic ROBOT MONSTER, considered the PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE of 3-D movies, screening on August 6 at 8:25 and August 7 at 6:00. The festival will continue with select screenings through November, with 3-D features, shorts, trailers, and special presentations.

In ROBOT MONSTER, an alien gorilla in a fishbowl space helmet decimates Earth with death rays and soap bubbles. George Nader, longtime friend (and one time lover) of Rock Hudson, stars, with music by a pre-TEN COMMANDMENTS Elmer Bernstein. Critic/historian Leonard Maltin wrote of it, ”One of the genuine legends of Hollywood: embarrassingly, hilariously awful…and dig that bubble machine with the TV antenna!”

The series includes the first NYC 3-D screening ever THE DIAMOND WIZARD (1954), starring Dennis O’Keefe as a U.S. treasury agent sent to England to track down a ring of diamond counterfeiters, in a brand new 3-D Film Archive restoration, and Mickey Spillane’s I, THE JURY (1953), a stereoscopic Film Noir starring Biff Elliott as Spillane’s private dick Mike Hammer, restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive, PKL Pictures, and Romulus Films Ltd.

In 1953, seventy years ago, 3-D conquered Hollywood. After years of speculation and experimentation, stereoscopic movies finally caught fire, luring audiences away from their televisions. Within the first few months of the year, every major studio was looking to explore the third dimension in every movie genre: horror (HOUSE OF WAX, THE MAZE), Film Noir (MAN IN THE DARK, I THE JURY), big-budget musicals (KISS ME KATE), thrillers (INFERNO, DIAL M FOR MURDER), monster movies (CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON), slapstick comedy (the Three Stooges’ SPOOKS and PARDON MY BACKFIRE), animation (Bugs Bunny, Woody Woodpecker, Casper The Friendly Ghost and Popeye cartoons), war pictures (CEASE FIRE!), Westerns (HONDO, GUN FURY, TAZA SON OF COCHISE, WINGS OF THE HAWK), and sci-fi A pictures (IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE) and Z pictures (ROBOT MONSTER).

Some of Hollywood’s top directors jumped on the band wagon:  Alfred Hitchcock, Budd Boetticher, William Cameron Menzies, Roy Ward Baker, George Sidney, Jack Arnold. Douglas Sirk, Raoul Walsh, and André de Toth (the latter two each with a single functioning eye that prevented them from enjoying the final effect). Nearly fifty 3-D feature films were produced in the years 1953 and 1954 alone, but the craze soon came to an abrupt end, aced by a newer and more enduring movie vogue: CinemaScope. But those two years can now be looked on as the Golden Age of 3-D Movies and Hollywood's first great 3-D Wave.

Film archivist, 3-D Film Archive founder and CEO Robert Furmanek, one of the world’s leading experts on stereoscopic movies, will introduce select screenings, as well as a special compilation of stereoscopic shorts restored by the Archive called 3-D RARITIES (see description below).

Bob Furmanek has played an important behind-the-scenes role in film preservation for more than forty years. Among his achievements, he is recognized for his restoration work with the films of Abbott and Costello and Jerry Lewis. In 1990, he began his ongoing efforts to save and restore our stereoscopic film heritage. Since 2014, the Archive has released over thirty acclaimed restorations on Blu-ray.

The Giant Gila Monster (1959) With Bonus Film, The Killer Shrews (1959) Blu-ray (Film Detective)
Drive-in schlock favorites The Giant Gila Monster & The Killer Shrews, originally released on a double-bill oversized animals unite once again!

The classic era of drive-in schlock was near its end in 1959, but there was still time for The Giant Gila Monster and The Killer Shrews, a pair of no-budget howlers from producer Gordon McLendon. In The Giant Gila Monster, a lizard takes on a small town. If that's not enough for you, there are plenty of cool cars and some ersatz rock 'n' roll sung by the movie's star, Don Sullivan (The Monster of Piedras Blancas). The Killer Shrews stars James Best (The Dukes of Hazard) as a riverboat pilot stuck on an island where the shrews are the size of German Shepherds. The cast includes Ken Curtis (Gunsmoke) and Ingrid Goude (Miss Universe, 1957). These two features were originally released on a double-bill. Trust us - they belong together!

Description: After a couple of teenagers go missing in a small Texas town, everyone assumes they've run off to the big city. But, when their bodies are found in a nearby creek, the sheriff (Fred Graham) is puzzled as to what could have killed them. Chase Winstead (Don Sullivan), the leader of a local hot rod group, agrees to help the sheriff, and together they discover evidence of a giant lizard roaming the desert. Soon the lizard is terrorizing the town, and only Chase can stop it before it's too late.

Special Features and Technical Specs:
  • NEW 4K RESTORATION OF THE FILM

Experience the Global Streaming Event August 10, 2023
LOS ANGELES, CA (May 1, 2023) – Today BOOM! Studios and Polygon Pictures, Inc. announced the star studded cast for the upcoming 3D animated series, MECH CADETS, streaming globally on Netflix August 10, 2023. Adapted from the bestselling BOOM! Studios comic series Mech Cadet Yu by acclaimed AAPI creators Greg Pak (World War Hulk) and Takeshi Miyazawa (Runaways), the series is set fifty years in the future, after a terrifying alien species attacked our planet, and follows teenager Stanford Yu who works as a janitor at the Sky Corps Military Academy. But he’s only dreamed of one thing his entire life — to pilot a Robo Mech, giant robots from outer-space who came to our aid. When he finally gets his shot, Stanford and his classmates must put aside all personal differences and work together as a team in order to defend humanity against a new alien invasion.

The ten-episode series hails from Japanese Animation studio Polygon Pictures Inc., whose credits include Star Wars: Resistance, Apple TV+’s Emmy Award-winning Stillwater, and Love, Death, + Robots for Netflix. The first episode of the series is an official selection of 2023’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival in the TV Films Competition category.

Brandon Soo Hoo (Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, From Dusk till Dawn: The Series) stars as Stanford Yu, a scrappy teenage underdog working as a janitor at Sky Corps who dreams of being a Robo Pilot.

Daniel Dae Kim (Lost, Raya and the Last Dragon) plays General Aiden Park, the battle-hardened leader of Sky Corps Academy and the Mech Cadet program. As a father of one of the cadets and a General he expects nothing short of perfection from his daughter and his soldiers.

Ming-Na Wen (The Mandalorian, Mulan) plays Dolly Yu, Stanford’s loving, if a bit overprotective, mother and the calm head of the janitorial team at Sky Corps.

Debra Wilson (MADtv, Family Guy) plays Chief Max, a former Robo pilot, head of Engineering at Sky Corps, and mentor to the trainees.

Rounding out the cast are: Aparna Brielle as Ava Patel, Victoria Grace as Olivia Park, Josh Sundquist as Frank Olivetti, Anairis Quinones as Maya Sanchez, and James Yaegashi as Captain Tanaka.

Aaron Lam (Ash Vs. The Evil Dead) serves as head writer and executive producer for the series. Tohru Patrick Awa (Super Mario Bros. Movie) is the supervising director. Mech Cadets is executive produced by Shuzo John Shiota and Jack Liang for Polygon Pictures, Inc., and Stephen Christy and Ross Richie for BOOM! Studios. BOOM!’s Mette Norkjaer is co-executive producer of the series and Polygon’s Bill E. Miller serves as producer.

The Mother-of-all-Transforming-and-Merging-Giant-Robots Debuts as a Live-Action Film!
Getter Robo is the story of giant robots by Go Nagai & Ken Ishikawa written between 1974 and 1975. It ran as a manga series on Weekly Shonen Sunday and also as a TV series on Fuji Television. The pinnacle of Japanese giant robot stories, Getter Robo is credited with introducing the “combining forces” element to the genre. While the TV series adopted a simple storyline of goodness prevailing over evil to appeal to a younger demographic, the original manga series by Ken Ishikawa had a more violent and harsh tone, which is celebrated by hardcore fans. The seminal masterpiece, appealing to a wide variety of anime and manga fans for many years will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025.

The film will be written, produced, and directed by Junya Okabe, whose previous works include “Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legends - The Movie,” “Cat Shit One,” “Brave Storm,” “ZvP (Zatoichi vs. Predator),” and many others.

Previous works by Junya Okabe:
  • Cat Shit One (2010 / Creator & Producer) *Winner of TCM Award 2010 Grand Prix *Nominated for the Short Animation Section of the 9th VES Awards
  • Brave Storm (2010 / Creator)
  • ZvP (Zatoichi vs. Predator) (2010 / Creator) *Winner - Best Director, “GOSH! FILM FESTIVAL 3rd Edition Awards”
Junya Okabe IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1001587/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

Our live-action film Getter Robo (based on the original manga series by Go Nagai & Ken Ishikawa), will be action-packed, and set in a gritty, violent, modern world. Investors in the project - with prospects for participating in the eventual feature-film production - are being accepted at this time.

Kickstarter Campaign for Proof-of-Concept Trailer
We are planning to release the feature film in theaters in 2025, in honor of Getter Robo's 50th anniversary. Realizing the unique look of the original manga will require many technically-challenging visual effects. To develop and test these effects properly, we are planning to produce a short, proof-of-concept film in collaboration with our team of talented artists at home and abroad. On large-scale Hollywood films, such tests would be covered by a portion of the feature film budget. Japanese films, however, are much more modestly budgeted and require separate funding for such tests. With Getter Robo, our mission is to surpass all existing live-action adaptations of manga and anime produced in Japan, and these tests are a critical part of meeting that goal. We are launching a Kickstarter campaign, and are humbly asking you, our fellow manga and Getter Robo fans, to help us bring this amazing series to the big screen! The crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter is presently underway and will remain so for about three weeks - until Monday, May 1st (PST). Rewards include exclusive online access to the proof-of-concept trailer prior to the general release, as well as access to the Making of Getter Robo documentary, and inclusion of the supporters’ names in the end credits.

Press release
Hollywood based Epic Pictures Group have acquired North American distribution rights, sales rights ex-Asia, and has also taken an investment position in Thailand's highly anticipated giant monster movie THE LAKE. Plans are to release the film March 10 in limited theatrical, followed by March 14 on digital platforms, and May 16 the film is set to hit physical media. Blu-ray pre-orders will launch on March 14. Discs will be available in retail stores on June 13.

A Hollywood Thailand production, directed by Lee Thongkham and produced by Watson Boy Homsangpradit with executive producer Patrick Ewald. In the film, an eco-thriller;  'A gigantic and bloodthirsty monster emerges from a lake after its egg is stolen and unleashes its fury on a town’s inhabitants, leaving a trail of destruction and death in its wake. The town of Bueng Kan, now cut off from the outside world, must mobilize its officials and citizens, as well as a group of scientists that are in town conducting research, to catch this predator before it's too late.'

The film's impressive gigantic monster, designed by Hollywood special effects wizard Jordu Schell, was brought to life using a combination of life-sized practical animatronics and CGI. Director Lee Thongkham had this to say "This movie will bring back the nostalgia of when we first loved the original monster movies with animatronics and puppets. But the most exciting thing about the movie is watching this monster movie with 40% CGI. You will feel the real and spectacular scope and scale from Thai cinema. The realness of the monster stomps. The realness of our monster roars and so forth.

This monster genre has been used in so many territories. But what makes our monster stand out from the rest is that it is real and it has a unique ability which we can’t give out the main plot point. But be assured that there will be a reason why we chose to use animatronic gigantic monsters in the story"

Epic Pictures Group CEO Patrick Ewald adds; "Inspired by the effects of real world environmental disasters, The Lake is a gripping movie that utilizes both practical and visual effects in truly impressive fashion.  Following in the massive footsteps of Godzilla from Japan and The Host from Korea, The Lake is Thailand’s bold answer to the creature feature.  We are so excited to unleash this ferocious beast upon audiences."

Launched in 2013, Epic Pictures Releasing is a US focused, theatrical and home entertainment label specialized in distributing professionally curated action, genre and independent films. As a leader in independent film distribution, Epic Pictures Releasing titles can be seen across a variety of platforms, including theatrical, digital, subscription and cable VOD, packaged media and broadcast television. Epic Pictures Releasing distributes 20-30 titles per year.

THE WORLD OF THE STORY
The whole movie setting takes place in the countryside of Thailand, showing how people from different technological backgrounds work together to deal with a phenomenon like a giant monster rising from the Lake. We decided to create a character-based perspective, grounded in the real world, and then layered otherworldly elements into that world.
