World Premiere of Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero Is 64th New York Film Festival Spotlight Gala

Film at Lincoln Center announces the world premiere of Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero as the Spotlight Gala selection for the 64th New York Film Festival. At the premiere presentation at Alice Tully Hall on September 26, Yamazaki and members of the cast and crew will be in attendance. Presented by Film at Lincoln Center in partnership with Rolex, the 64th New York Film Festival will take place from September 25 through October 12.
After Godzilla Minus One’s triumphant reimagination of the timeless Godzilla franchise in 2023, with its ingenious, Oscar-winning visual effects and emotionally gripping back-to-basics storytelling approach, director Takashi Yamazaki returns with a supremely satisfying sequel. Godzilla Minus Zero picks up in 1949, two years after the tumultuous events of Godzilla Minus One, and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity. An experience that demands the big screen, featuring even more astounding effects choreography than its predecessor, Godzilla Minus Zero cranks up the terror while always keeping its post-WWII Japan narrative at human eye level. Born in Matsumoto City in 1964, Takashi Yamazaki is a filmmaker and visual effects supervisor, considered one of Japan’s leading film directors. He became the first director since Stanley Kubrick to win an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for Godzilla Minus One, which is currently the third highest grossing live action foreign-language film in U.S. box office history. The film won eight Japan Academy Prizes, including Best Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. Yamazaki credits childhood viewings of Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind with influencing his career in special effects. After graduating from Asagaya College of Art and Design, he joined VFX house Shirogumi Inc. in 1986, working on SFX and digital compositing in films directed by Juzo Itami. He made his debut as a director with Juvenile (2000) and became a leading figure in visual expression and VFX in Japan. His film Always: Sunset on Third Street (2005) won 12 awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, at the 29th Japan Academy Film Awards, and his films The Eternal Zero (2013) and Stand by Me Doraemon (2014) won Best Picture and eight other Japan Academy Prizes.

An all-new teaser and poster for the upcoming Godzilla Minus Zero debuted today, along with more information about the film’s story and characters.
Godzilla Minus Zero picks up in 1949, two years after the tumultuous events of Godzilla Minus One, and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity. In this latest teaser we see additional members from the Godzilla Minus One cast returning and the reveal of a new character, Kanji Murakami, a biologist carrying deep psychological scars from the war. Played by Min Tanaka, celebrated for his unforgettable performance in the 2025 blockbuster Japanese film Kokuho, Murakami will be a pivotal character in the upcoming film.
Fans can also look forward to the return of additional Godzilla Minus One favorites, who join the previously announced Ryunosuke Kamiki as Koichi Shikishima and Minami Hamabe as Noriko Shikishima:
- Hidetaka Yoshioka reprises his role as Kenji Noda, who fought alongside Koichi Shikishima in Godzilla Minus One and now battles the new threat as the director of the Disaster Response Bureau.
- Yuki Yamada returns as Shiro Mizushima, the young crew member of the Shinseimaru who fought on the front lines, alongside Kuranosuke Sasaki as Seiji Akitsu, the captain of the same vessel.
- Sakura Ando reprises her role as Sumiko Ota, Shikishima's neighbor who now runs a local orphanage.
- Miou Tanaka returns as Tatsuo Hotta, the former captain of the destroyer Yukikaze.
In the newly debuted poster, fans get a closer look at the latest Godzilla design. When viewed with new story information, it paints an impactful picture of what Godzilla Minus Zero may have in store.

On November 3rd, Alamo Drafthouse theaters will celebrate Godzilla Day 2025 with a rare screening of THE RETURN OF GODZILLA, the first film in the legendary “Heisei” era. Originally released in Japan in 1984 and later re-edited for U.S. audiences as GODZILLA 1985, this action-packed entry remains one of the most beloved installments in the Godzilla franchise.
Super-fans in the San Francisco Bay Area can spend the day with their monster pals at a Mystery Marathon on Sunday, November 2nd, at Alamo Drafthouse’s kaiju-themed Westfield Valley Fair location in Santa Clara, CA. Open since June, the location is, fittingly, the largest in the Alamo Drafthouse circuit, and boasts dozens of vintage kaiju posters on the walls, Godzilla-themed snacks, and an eye-popping two-story window display of Godzilla.

Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II (1993)
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II is the 20th film in the Godzilla series and despite the title, it is not a direct sequel to the original 1974 Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla but rather a new interpretation of the Mechagodzilla concept.
The film also introduces “Garuda”, a secondary flying mecha that can combine with Mechagodzilla into Super Mechagodzilla!
Known for its high production values and dynamic monster battles, Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II is often regarded as one of the stronger films in the Godzilla series.

UNVEIL NEW PARTNERSHIP + HUB FOR GODZILLA FANDOM
The world’s first kaiju-themed movie theater kicks off Alamo Drafthouse and Toho International’s new alliance, with exclusive merch and special programming on the way for 2025 and beyond.
Santa Clara, CA — June 23, 2025 — Dine-in movie theater company Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has forged a monster-sized multi-year alliance with Japan’s legendary Toho International, the home of GODZILLA and an entire universe of kaiju. The multi-year collaboration will first roar to life inside the brand-new Alamo Drafthouse Valley Fair, one of the company’s two Silicon Valley expansions opening this summer, located at Westfield Valley Fair in Santa Clara. But a primordial force like Godzilla can’t be confined to just one theater, and later this year, Alamo Drafthouse will roll out special programming and exclusive merchandise to Alamo Drafthouse locations nationwide, as well as its retail arm at AlamoMart.com.
Alamo Drafthouse Valley Fair opens today inside Santa Clara’s Westfield Valley Fair shopping center. Upon launch, it will have several special treats for Godzilla fans – like a two-story Godzilla window projection at the very front of the theater – but much more is on the way, including two colossal kaiju head displays featuring Godzilla and Mechagodzilla designed in partnership with Toho. Upstairs, the new Bar Odo pays tribute to Godzilla’s fictional birthplace with specialty cocktails and an ever-rotating craft beer lineup, perfect for a pre- or post-screening drink.
The partnership’s seismic launch event is planned for later this year with a nationwide birthday bash on November 3rd commemorating Godzilla’s birthday, a full merch rollout, and additional surprises. In 2021, Alamo Drafthouse celebrated Godzilla's birthday with the world premiere of Toho's 4K remastering of the 1954 original Japanese release, GOJIRA.

Superstar artist and long-time Alamo Drafthouse collaborator Tom Whalen leads the charge with an officially licensed t-shirt and pint glass design that’s available now for preorder. Each is available in strictly limited quantities. The line will expand later this year with the first-ever official Godzilla popcorn bucket and an exclusive Mothra mug designed by Alamo’s own Art Director Scott Sugiuchi, plus limited edition blankets, hats, and enamel pin sets.

Kaiju Programming at Alamo Drafthouse
With 18,000 screenings of 27 different movies just since 2013, Toho’s films have always been a favorite of Alamo Drafthouse’s programming team and their audiences. To baptize the screens in true monster fashion, Valley Fair will frequently screen kaiju classics, with multiple screenings kicking off in July packed with creature carnage:
- DESTROY ALL MONSTERS (1968) – Week of 7/5
- The ultimate monster mash-up. Eleven kaiju (including Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah, Anguirus, and Minilla) in one city-crushing showdown.
- GODZILLA VS. HEDORAH (1971) – Week of 7/12
- A trippy, eco-horror cult classic where Godzilla takes on smog itself.
- MOTHRA (1961) – Week of 7/26
- A majestic guardian moth, fairy twins, and lush technicolor spectacle. This is kaiju cinema at its most enchanting.
