World Premiere of Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero Is 64th New York Film Festival Spotlight Gala

Film at Lincoln Center announces the world premiere of Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero as the Spotlight Gala selection for the 64th New York Film Festival. At the premiere presentation at Alice Tully Hall on September 26, Yamazaki and members of the cast and crew will be in attendance. Presented by Film at Lincoln Center in partnership with Rolex, the 64th New York Film Festival will take place from September 25 through October 12.

After Godzilla Minus One’s triumphant reimagination of the timeless Godzilla franchise in 2023, with its ingenious, Oscar-winning visual effects and emotionally gripping back-to-basics storytelling approach, director Takashi Yamazaki returns with a supremely satisfying sequel. Godzilla Minus Zero picks up in 1949, two years after the tumultuous events of Godzilla Minus One, and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity. An experience that demands the big screen, featuring even more astounding effects choreography than its predecessor, Godzilla Minus Zero cranks up the terror while always keeping its post-WWII Japan narrative at human eye level. Born in Matsumoto City in 1964, Takashi Yamazaki is a filmmaker and visual effects supervisor, considered one of Japan’s leading film directors. He became the first director since Stanley Kubrick to win an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for Godzilla Minus One, which is currently the third highest grossing live action foreign-language film in U.S. box office history. The film won eight Japan Academy Prizes, including Best Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. Yamazaki credits childhood viewings of Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind with influencing his career in special effects. After graduating from Asagaya College of Art and Design, he joined VFX house Shirogumi Inc. in 1986, working on SFX and digital compositing in films directed by Juzo Itami. He made his debut as a director with Juvenile (2000) and became a leading figure in visual expression and VFX in Japan. His film Always: Sunset on Third Street (2005) won 12 awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, at the 29th Japan Academy Film Awards, and his films The Eternal Zero (2013) and Stand by Me Doraemon (2014) won Best Picture and eight other Japan Academy Prizes.

The NYFF Main Slate and Spotlight selection committee is chaired by Dennis Lim, NYFF Artistic Director, and includes Florence Almozini, Justin Chang, and Rachel Rosen.

NEW TEASER AND ADDITIONAL CAST ANNOUNCED FOR GODZILLA MINUS ZERO

An all-new teaser and poster for the upcoming Godzilla Minus Zero debuted today, along with more information about the film’s story and characters.

Godzilla Minus Zero picks up in 1949, two years after the tumultuous events of Godzilla Minus One, and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity. In this latest teaser we see additional members from the Godzilla Minus One cast returning and the reveal of a new character, Kanji Murakami, a biologist carrying deep psychological scars from the war. Played by Min Tanaka, celebrated for his unforgettable performance in the 2025 blockbuster Japanese film Kokuho, Murakami will be a pivotal character in the upcoming film. 

Fans can also look forward to the return of additional Godzilla Minus One favorites, who join the previously announced Ryunosuke Kamiki as Koichi Shikishima and Minami Hamabe as Noriko Shikishima: 

• Hidetaka Yoshioka reprises his role as Kenji Noda, who fought alongside Koichi Shikishima in Godzilla Minus One and now battles the new threat as the director of the Disaster Response Bureau. 
• Yuki Yamada returns as Shiro Mizushima, the young crew member of the Shinseimaru who fought on the front lines, alongside Kuranosuke Sasaki as Seiji Akitsu, the captain of the same vessel. 
• Sakura Ando reprises her role as Sumiko Ota, Shikishima's neighbor who now runs a local orphanage.
• Miou Tanaka returns as Tatsuo Hotta, the former captain of the destroyer Yukikaze.

In the newly debuted poster, fans get a closer look at the latest Godzilla design. When viewed with new story information, it paints an impactful picture of what Godzilla Minus Zero may have in store.

War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life.

Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant.
