Official Warner Bros GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS Ack-Ives Variant Cover
Apr 2, 2019 | Featured, FM Magazine |

Just when you thought the first volume of the ACK-IVES couldn’t get any more exciting…

We have officially teamed up with Warner Bros Pictures for a special newsstand edition of Famous Monsters Ack-Ives: Godzilla!
This variant edition features an exclusive cover created by the team at Art Machine for Warner Bros and inspired by the highly anticipated new MonsterVerse picture GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, which is due to hit theaters on May 31, 2019!

The variant issue will be available on newsstand shelves on May 7 to give you just enough time to peruse it… before the movie swallows you whole. It is also available for preorder on our web store NOW, so don’t wait!

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS comes on the tail successes of Legendary and Warner Bros’ GODZILLA (2014) and KONG: SKULL ISLAND (2017), the latter of which contained a post-credits scene foreshadowing the debut of MonsterVerse creatures Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. These three famous kaiju star alongside Godzilla himself in the new movie — though as friends or foes, it’s not entirely clear.

In addition to over 100 pages of long out-of-print content from Famous Monsters’ 60+ year history, Famous Monsters Ack-Ives: Godzilla also contains an up close and personal interview (sneak peek below) with GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS director Michael Dougherty. Dougherty is an admitted lifelong fan of the big green beast, and he talks to FM about what fans can expect from the movie — as well as details of his own semi-embarrassing fandom history, which may or may not involve doodling in the pages of his elementary school Bible.

Check out the official cover art above, and don’t forget to go see GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS on May 31!

Director Michael Dougherty on Putting the “God” in GODZILLA
Feb 15, 2019 | Interviews |

The anticipation for Legendary’s new MonsterVerse picture GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS has reached a pointed peak and is now teetering rather gleefully over the edge. Fans all over the world are being treated to brand new posters, teaser trailers, and toy reveals, and the much-delayed release of the movie is finally on the horizon: May 31, 2019. Godzilla freaks are already marking their calendars, but with a new director on board in Michael Dougherty and three new monsters to contend with since GODZILLA (2014), what should the average monster kid be expecting?

“The approach that my writing partner Zach Shields and I took was that Godzilla, the MUTOs, Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah — they’re a super-species,” Dougherty explains in a new FM interview. “These creatures were worshipped as ancient gods; they are the reasons we have stories about dragons and giants and titans. Because if you look at the entire world’s collection of ancient myths, you realize that they all have stories about monsters. What we’re trying to establish is the idea that Godzilla and his brethren are the reason for that.”

Might that give the giant green lizard some religious implications?

“There’s a reason that Godzilla is called Godzilla,” he laughs. “Humans understood once — these guys are the bosses, we need to live under them. But then that relationship was severed. That covenant was broken, the creatures went into hibernation for a long while, and humanity forgot that connection. This film is really about mankind trying to rekindle that relationship, to understand that humans are no longer at the top of the food chain.”

The message seems similar that to 1954’s Gojira: a historic cataclysm come to life as a monster, terrorizing and humbling the human race.

“I think the human species is overdue for a humbling,” says Dougherty.

Many would agree with him.

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS opens in theaters everywhere on May 31, but you can read all about him and his foes — as well as our full interview with Michael Dougherty — in the inaugural edition of the Famous Monsters Ack-Ives, released on May 8!
