Pacific Rim: Uprising hit theaters this weekend and there's a lot to take away from it but will really count is the final numbers. PRU opened with $28 million in the US and $150 worldwide, while it dethroned Black Panther as the top film the $28 million is shy of the first films opening of $38 million in the US. But as with the first film what may save it is the international box office, particular China.
It debut their with a $65 million opening, about $20 million more than the first film, and has also surpassed the first films opening overall take (of note the China opening came later with the first film, nearly three weeks). The first film took in $309 million, with about $112 of that from China (PRU has more than half of that China total already), and with the $122.5 international total it's almost a third of the way there. It's still unclear where it will end up because Rampage, another monster flick, will hit April 13, before that this Friday is Ready Player One, and not to forget Avengers Infinity War hits in about a month. And with how well Black Panther did it's almost guaranteed to take over the box office.
