Presented in Association with 3-D Film Archive

“A DEEPER LOOK”: HOLLYWOOD’S FIRST 3-D WAVE, 1953-1954, a celebration of the 70th anniversary of Hollywood’s 3-D craze of the early 1950s, will run at Film Forum, beginning with the NYC theatrical premiere of the 3-D Film Archive’s new restoration of the cult classic ROBOT MONSTER, considered the PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE of 3-D movies, screening on August 6 at 8:25 and August 7 at 6:00. The festival will continue with select screenings through November, with 3-D features, shorts, trailers, and special presentations.

In ROBOT MONSTER, an alien gorilla in a fishbowl space helmet decimates Earth with death rays and soap bubbles. George Nader, longtime friend (and one time lover) of Rock Hudson, stars, with music by a pre-TEN COMMANDMENTS Elmer Bernstein. Critic/historian Leonard Maltin wrote of it, ”One of the genuine legends of Hollywood: embarrassingly, hilariously awful…and dig that bubble machine with the TV antenna!”

The series includes the first NYC 3-D screening ever THE DIAMOND WIZARD (1954), starring Dennis O’Keefe as a U.S. treasury agent sent to England to track down a ring of diamond counterfeiters, in a brand new 3-D Film Archive restoration, and Mickey Spillane’s I, THE JURY (1953), a stereoscopic Film Noir starring Biff Elliott as Spillane’s private dick Mike Hammer, restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive, PKL Pictures, and Romulus Films Ltd.

In 1953, seventy years ago, 3-D conquered Hollywood. After years of speculation and experimentation, stereoscopic movies finally caught fire, luring audiences away from their televisions. Within the first few months of the year, every major studio was looking to explore the third dimension in every movie genre: horror (HOUSE OF WAX, THE MAZE), Film Noir (MAN IN THE DARK, I THE JURY), big-budget musicals (KISS ME KATE), thrillers (INFERNO, DIAL M FOR MURDER), monster movies (CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON), slapstick comedy (the Three Stooges’ SPOOKS and PARDON MY BACKFIRE), animation (Bugs Bunny, Woody Woodpecker, Casper The Friendly Ghost and Popeye cartoons), war pictures (CEASE FIRE!), Westerns (HONDO, GUN FURY, TAZA SON OF COCHISE, WINGS OF THE HAWK), and sci-fi A pictures (IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE) and Z pictures (ROBOT MONSTER).

Some of Hollywood’s top directors jumped on the band wagon:  Alfred Hitchcock, Budd Boetticher, William Cameron Menzies, Roy Ward Baker, George Sidney, Jack Arnold. Douglas Sirk, Raoul Walsh, and André de Toth (the latter two each with a single functioning eye that prevented them from enjoying the final effect). Nearly fifty 3-D feature films were produced in the years 1953 and 1954 alone, but the craze soon came to an abrupt end, aced by a newer and more enduring movie vogue: CinemaScope. But those two years can now be looked on as the Golden Age of 3-D Movies and Hollywood's first great 3-D Wave.

Film archivist, 3-D Film Archive founder and CEO Robert Furmanek, one of the world’s leading experts on stereoscopic movies, will introduce select screenings, as well as a special compilation of stereoscopic shorts restored by the Archive called 3-D RARITIES (see description below).

Bob Furmanek has played an important behind-the-scenes role in film preservation for more than forty years. Among his achievements, he is recognized for his restoration work with the films of Abbott and Costello and Jerry Lewis. In 1990, he began his ongoing efforts to save and restore our stereoscopic film heritage. Since 2014, the Archive has released over thirty acclaimed restorations on Blu-ray.

The Giant Gila Monster (1959) With Bonus Film, The Killer Shrews (1959) Blu-ray (Film Detective)
Drive-in schlock favorites The Giant Gila Monster & The Killer Shrews, originally released on a double-bill oversized animals unite once again!

The classic era of drive-in schlock was near its end in 1959, but there was still time for The Giant Gila Monster and The Killer Shrews, a pair of no-budget howlers from producer Gordon McLendon. In The Giant Gila Monster, a lizard takes on a small town. If that's not enough for you, there are plenty of cool cars and some ersatz rock 'n' roll sung by the movie's star, Don Sullivan (The Monster of Piedras Blancas). The Killer Shrews stars James Best (The Dukes of Hazard) as a riverboat pilot stuck on an island where the shrews are the size of German Shepherds. The cast includes Ken Curtis (Gunsmoke) and Ingrid Goude (Miss Universe, 1957). These two features were originally released on a double-bill. Trust us - they belong together!

Description: After a couple of teenagers go missing in a small Texas town, everyone assumes they've run off to the big city. But, when their bodies are found in a nearby creek, the sheriff (Fred Graham) is puzzled as to what could have killed them. Chase Winstead (Don Sullivan), the leader of a local hot rod group, agrees to help the sheriff, and together they discover evidence of a giant lizard roaming the desert. Soon the lizard is terrorizing the town, and only Chase can stop it before it's too late.

But he’s only dreamed of one thing his entire life — to pilot a Robo Mech, giant robots from outer-space who came to our aid. When he finally gets his shot, Stanford and his classmates must put aside all personal differences and work together as a team in order to defend humanity against a new alien invasion.

The ten-episode series hails from Japanese Animation studio Polygon Pictures Inc., whose credits include Star Wars: Resistance, Apple TV+’s Emmy Award-winning Stillwater, and Love, Death, + Robots for Netflix. The Mother-of-all-Transforming-and-Merging-Giant-Robots Debuts as a Live-Action Film!
Getter Robo is the story of giant robots by Go Nagai & Ken Ishikawa written between 1974 and 1975. It ran as a manga series on Weekly Shonen Sunday and also as a TV series on Fuji Television. The pinnacle of Japanese giant robot stories, Getter Robo is credited with introducing the “combining forces” element to the genre. While the TV series adopted a simple storyline of goodness prevailing over evil to appeal to a younger demographic, the original manga series by Ken Ishikawa had a more violent and harsh tone, which is celebrated by hardcore fans. The seminal masterpiece, appealing to a wide variety of anime and manga fans for many years will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025.

The film will be written, produced, and directed by Junya Okabe, whose previous works include “Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legends - The Movie,” “Cat Shit One,” “Brave Storm,” “ZvP (Zatoichi vs. Predator),” and many others.

Previous works by Junya Okabe:
  • Cat Shit One (2010 / Creator & Producer) *Winner of TCM Award 2010 Grand Prix *Nominated for the Short Animation Section of the 9th VES Awards
  • Brave Storm (2010 / Creator)
  • ZvP (Zatoichi vs. Predator) (2010 / Creator) *Winner - Best Director, “GOSH! FILM FESTIVAL 3rd Edition Awards”

Our live-action film Getter Robo (based on the original manga series by Go Nagai & Ken Ishikawa), will be action-packed, and set in a gritty, violent, modern world. Investors in the project - with prospects for participating in the eventual feature-film production - are being accepted at this time.

Kickstarter Campaign for Proof-of-Concept Trailer
We are planning to release the feature film in theaters in 2025, in honor of Getter Robo's 50th anniversary. Realizing the unique look of the original manga will require many technically-challenging visual effects. To develop and test these effects properly, we are planning to produce a short, proof-of-concept film in collaboration with our team of talented artists at home and abroad. On large-scale Hollywood films, such tests would be covered by a portion of the feature film budget. Japanese films, however, are much more modestly budgeted and require separate funding for such tests. With Getter Robo, our mission is to surpass all existing live-action adaptations of manga and anime produced in Japan, and these tests are a critical part of meeting that goal. We are launching a Kickstarter campaign, and are humbly asking you, our fellow manga and Getter Robo fans, to help us bring this amazing series to the big screen! The crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter is presently underway and will remain so for about three weeks - until Monday, May 1st (PST). Rewards include exclusive online access to the proof-of-concept trailer prior to the general release, as well as access to the Making of Getter Robo documentary, and inclusion of the supporters’ names in the end credits.

Hollywood based Epic Pictures Group have acquired North American distribution rights, sales rights ex-Asia, and has also taken an investment position in Thailand's highly anticipated giant monster movie THE LAKE. Plans are to release the film March 10 in limited theatrical, followed by March 14 on digital platforms, and May 16 the film is set to hit physical media. Blu-ray pre-orders will launch on March 14. Discs will be available in retail stores on June 13.

A Hollywood Thailand production, directed by Lee Thongkham and produced by Watson Boy Homsangpradit with executive producer Patrick Ewald. In the film, an eco-thriller;  'A gigantic and bloodthirsty monster emerges from a lake after its egg is stolen and unleashes its fury on a town’s inhabitants, leaving a trail of destruction and death in its wake. The town of Bueng Kan, now cut off from the outside world, must mobilize its officials and citizens, as well as a group of scientists that are in town conducting research, to catch this predator before it's too late.'

The film's impressive gigantic monster, designed by Hollywood special effects wizard Jordu Schell, was brought to life using a combination of life-sized practical animatronics and CGI. Director Lee Thongkham had this to say "This movie will bring back the nostalgia of when we first loved the original monster movies with animatronics and puppets. But the most exciting thing about the movie is watching this monster movie with 40% CGI. You will feel the real and spectacular scope and scale from Thai cinema. The realness of the monster stomps. The realness of our monster roars and so forth.

This monster genre has been used in so many territories. But what makes our monster stand out from the rest is that it is real and it has a unique ability which we can’t give out the main plot point. But be assured that there will be a reason why we chose to use animatronic gigantic monsters in the story"

Epic Pictures Group CEO Patrick Ewald adds; "Inspired by the effects of real world environmental disasters, The Lake is a gripping movie that utilizes both practical and visual effects in truly impressive fashion.  Following in the massive footsteps of Godzilla from Japan and The Host from Korea, The Lake is Thailand’s bold answer to the creature feature.  We are so excited to unleash this ferocious beast upon audiences."

THE WORLD OF THE STORY
The whole movie setting takes place in the countryside of Thailand, showing how people from different technological backgrounds work together to deal with a phenomenon like a giant monster rising from the Lake. Fans choose the next playable colossal combatant in this monstrous co-op beat-'em-up!

Press release
Valencia, Calif. and Toronto, Ontario — November 9, 2022 — The kaiju-crushing combat rages on in Dawn of the Monsters! Independent game studio WayForward and developer 13AM Games are excited to announce that even more content is coming to the critically acclaimed giant-monster beat-'em-up, Dawn of the Monsters, which launched in March 2022 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Among the new content is an all-new playable character, which fans will be able to vote on from a selection of three gargantuan gladiators. The poll to determine the winner can be found at https://survey.survicate.com/d4538f262838b66f/?_svbep=P3A9YW5vbnltb3Vz.

Three behemoth brawlers are ready to earn your vote: the ape-like Ziranoth, the stone warrior Daizosan, and the mecha combiner Meteor Temujin. Resembling a primate wearing a mantle of vegetation, Ziranoth is a guardian of nature with an animalistic fighting style; its "operator" is Li Mei, a girl who befriended the beast while stranded on an uninhabited island. Diazosan, meanwhile, is a living statue that specializes in Rage generation and can trample enemies with ground-shaking rampage attacks. Last but not least is Meteor Temujin, a combining, multi-melee-weapon-wielding ATOM piloted by college genius Grace Galvan and her friends. Though all three giants are prepared for combat, only one will join the fight!

Whichever new character is selected will join the existing roster of four playable titans — Megadon, the "living volcano"; Ganira, the colossal crustacean; Aegis Prime, the gigantic superhero; and Tempest Galahad, the atomic-powered mecha — who go into battle against the apocalyptic Nephilim hordes. The action unfolds across more than 35 missions packed with combos and special moves, destructible environments, deep character customization, unique manga-style visuals, a captivating story with full voice acting, and two-player cooperative gameplay.

In addition to the new playable character, Dawn of the Monsters will also be receiving other new content, including new modes, missions, and Japanese voiceovers, in the form of both free and paid DLC. This content is planned to launch in 2023, with further details being made available in the future. For the latest Dawn of the Monsters updates — including the winner of the new playable character poll once voting has concluded — please visit www.wayforward.com and www.13amgames.com, and follow @wayforward and @13amgames on social media.

METEOR TEMUJIN
Grace Galvan was a child genius with a penchant for reverse engineering all kinds of tech and building her own versions. With the help of three of her college classmates, Grace scavenged pieces from large construction equipment and prototype ATOMs that failed to defend Los Angeles a few years ago. She started building a wonder of her own: Meteor Temujin, four ATOMs that combine into a single giant warrior.

After four years, Meteor Temujin is finally ready, and Grace and her friends have decided to join forces with Team Sunrise to stop the Nephilim threat, and fight for their future! However, their most dangerous enemy might not be the uncanny monsters, but Syncor's legal team, who claim ownership over Galvan’s creation…

Meteor Temujin is piloted by a team consisting of creator Grace Galvan, who pilots the Gold ATOM  (head and wings), and three of her college classmates on the Red (torso), Blue (left limbs) and Green (right limbs) ATOMs.

DAIZOSAN
Legend has it that the massive statue of Daizosan has been in the slopes of this mountain in northern Honshu, Japan, long before the village that it watches over was built.

There are different versions of the tale of how the villagers found the stone flute that can be played to ask the colossal guardian to protect the hamlet from corrupt daimyos’ samurai, bandits, or other threats. Every eight years, the flute is passed from its current holder to a younger priestess in a beautiful traditional ceremony.

DAWN researchers have pointed out similarities between Daizosan and the architecture and inscriptions found in the Hatteras depths. This lead them to believe that the mysterious builders of those underwater ruins also constructed Daizosan in long-forgotten times.

The current Flute-Holder is Kaede Nitai, a young shrine maiden.

Facing the Nephilim invasion, Kaede has set off from her village to join DAWN, lending Daizosan’s powers to the rest of the world.

ZIRANOTH
Ziranoth was one of the first Nephilim to be captured by DAWN in the early days of Project Raven, 25 years ago. Due to Project Raven's initial failures, the violent Ziranoth was released in an uninhabited island somewhere in the Indian Ocean.

Only recently, with the revived Project Raven's success with Megadon and Ganira, has DAWN returned for Ziranoth. What they found astonished them: Ziranoth underwent some kind of transformation. Reports claim he has since become bigger and bulkier, has grown a mantle of vegetation of sorts, and was found alongside a mysterious girl stranded in the island.

Li Mei is a 16 year old girl from Chongqing (Yuzhong District, China).

She survived a plane crash that killed her parents and twin sister, and got stuck in the same island as Ziranoth.

Li Mei learned survival skills and befriended the giant beast, which was surprisingly amiable towards her.

Aliens from another world seeking the conquest of Earth invade with flying saucers. They unleash a gigantic monster called Wangmagwi, who destroys everything in its path. The Air Force, led by ace pilot Ahn Hee, is dispatched, but can do little in such still heavily populated areas. Amidst the carnage, the Space Monster picks up Ahn Hee’s bride, Oh Jeong-hwan, carrying her along as it carries out the alien orders. However, when it tries to crush a young boy, named Spider, the kid evades the monster by scrambling up its arm and hitching a ride in the monster’s ear. He tortures it from within, cutting through its ear drum and, after finding a path to the nostrils, stabbing its inner nasal cavity. Eventually, Wangmagwi deploys a powerful death ray, melting entire buildings, forcing Ahn to finally take action. He executes a risky plan to save his bride and the kid, while hopefully stopping the beast once and for all.

“Space Monster Wangmagwi” is a 1967 South Korean kaiju film. It was the second giant monster film to be made in South Korea (and first feature length one). A holy grail among kaiju fans, it was long thought to be lost until an original print emerged out of the blue a few years ago. It is being released on physical media for the FIRST time EVER - anywhere in the world - thanks to SRS Cinema.
