The casting call for Kong: Skull Island seems to suggest the film is actually a sequel rather then a reboot, while this is no guarantee, this is certainly interesting. Principal photography begins in Atlanta, Georgia this October, before moving production to Kauai, Hawaii. “Kong: Skull Island takes place years after the original film. In 1933, American showman, Carl Denham returned from a mysterious, hidden island with a priceless treasure. A treasure not gold or jewels, but the island’s barabric god, a monstrous anthropoid called “Kong.” The savage giant escaped and wreaked havoc among the man-made canyons of Manhattan, but within hours of the giant apes death his body, and Carl Denham, disappeared. Many years later, the son of Carl Denham makes a shocking discovery that leads him back to the site of his father’s greatest adventure and to the answers that will unlock the century’s greatest mystery and history’s greatest miracle.” In an interview posted on MTV's site with J. K. Simmons and Michael Keaton at the Academy Awards they revealed a few tidbits about the Kong: Skull Island. First the film will take place in 1971 in Detroit, which is interesting because it will take place closer to the '70's Kong remakes time frame rather then the time frame of the original and the 2005 remake which took place in the '30's. The second bit of info is that it will be an origin story, which hopefully means sequels. Keaton also seemed to suggest he is definitely on board. Kong: Skull Island is set to be released March 10, 2017. From Bloody Disgusting One of the greatest actors of our time, Michael Keaton, is said to be finalising a deal to join the cast of Legendary Pictures’ Kong: Skull Island, says Deadline. Keaton – best known to us from Batman and Beatlejuice, as well as the recent critically acclaimed Birdman (pictured), will join the previously announced Tom Hiddleston (Only Lovers Left Alive, Avengers, Thor) and JK Simmons (Whiplash). Kong: Skull Island promises to fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the iconic ape as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. Jordan Vogt-Roberts directs from a script written by John Gatins and Max Borenstein. Universal Pictures will distribute the King Kong-inspired film in 3D and IMAX 3D on March 10, 2017. From Deadline Legendary pushed back its fantasy actioner Skull Island and gave it a clearer title – now it’s Kong: Skull Island, in case you didn’t know which King of the movie apes called the primordial paradise home – as the company shuffled some tentpole dates around today. The origin tale is set on the fictional island home of King Kong, where a team of explorers led by Tom Hiddleston explore into the treacherous jungle in what Legendary describes as a “new, distinct timeline” within the iconic beast’s canon. Helmed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer), the 3D and IMAC 3D pic is moving from November 4, 2016 to March 10, 2017. Note: This means it would open a month before Pacific Rim 2, it will be interesting to see if they move that film as will, both are Legendary produced films. From Deadline Legendary Pictures has set Flight scribe John Gatins to do the next draft of Skull Island, the King Kong origin pic that Tom Hiddleston will star in and Jordan Vogt-Roberts will direct. The project was the big surprise in Legendary’s action-packed presentation at Comic-Con. The script was penned by Max Borenstein, who got it far enough for Universal to date it for November 4, 2016, release before he went on to write the next installment of Godzilla for Legendary. Gatins, who frankly seems too handsome to be an Oscar-nominated writer, is repped by UTA. From EW
King Kong is coming to Netflix in 2016, but the animated Kong – King of the Apes won’t be telling the same old Skull Island story you’re used to hearing. Set in 2050, Kong becomes a wanted fugitive after wrecking havoc at Alcatraz Island’s Natural History and Marine Preserve. What most humans on the hunt for the formidable animal don’t realize, though, is that Kong was framed by an evil genius who plans to terrorize the world with an army of enormous robotic dinosaurs. As the only beast strong enough to save humanity from the mechanical dinos, Kong must rely on the help of three kids who know the truth about him. The original CGI animation series from Netflix and 41 Entertainment will be targeted at kids and introduced through a feature-length film that will be followed by 12 half-hour episodes starting in 2016. Industry vet Avi Arad, who’s produced Iron Man, the Spider-Man movies, and many of the X-Men films, is serving as executive producer on the series. “We’re thrilled to be working with Avi who has made some of the most successful action and adventure franchises today and whose Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventure series has been very popular on Netflix around the world,” Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said. “With 41 Entertainment as our partner on this, we continue to work with some of the finest animation studios around the world to create shows that will appeal to kids of all ages globally.” Arad added: “I always loved King Kong. This is a unique opportunity to introduce him in brilliant CGI animation to kids worldwide with the power of Netflix.” Legendary announced its plans to make a feature film based on the cinematic origins of King Kong during this year's San Diego Comic Con with an original draft of the script by Max Borenstein. Previous works have touched on the island, but staying on and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions. Universal Pictures will distribute the film on November 4, 2016.
Vogt-Roberts directed and executive produced the Sundance darling THE KINGS OF SUMMER. He has also directed the pilot and multiple episodes of FX's new series "You're the Worst" and is set to direct METAL GEAR SOLID for Sony. His other credits include directing the pilot of "Cocked" for Amazon Studios and directing and executive producing the concert documentary NICK OFFERMAN: AMERICAN HAM. He is represented by UTA, 3 Arts Entertainment and attorneys Alan Wertheimer and Andy Gawker. Hiddleston's credits include MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE, and WAR HORSE. He is also known for portraying Thor's nemesis and brother, Loki, in Marvel's THOR, THOR: THE DARK WORLD, and THE AVENGERS. Upcoming projects include Legendary's gothic horror CRIMSON PEAK from director Guillermo del Toro, Ben Wheatley's adaptation of J.G. Ballard's HIGH-RISE and Marc Abraham's Hank Williams biopic I SAW THE LIGHT. He is repped by William Morris Endeavor, Hamilton Hodell and Authentic Management. Legendary's recent releases include GODZILLA, 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE and the Guillermo del Toro directed PACIFIC RIM as well as the Jackie Robinson biopic 42 and MAN OF STEEL with Warner Bros. In addition to WARCRAFT, highlights from Legendary's upcoming slate include BLACKHAT and CRIMSON PEAK. The end of Legendary's panel gave monster fans a bit of a surprise Skull Island and King Kong look to return to the big screen, below is from the panel via Newsarama. One more piece of footage was shown to close out the panel. It's a Skull Island teaser trailer, with King Kong featured last in the shot. This was the secret movie with Universal Pictures based on an established property Legendary teased several weeks back (the one some rumors pegged as a Namor movie). "Prepare to explore the mysterious and dangerous Skull Island. In theaters November 4, 2016," Legendary tweeted after the panel, later adding in a press release: “Previous works have touched on the island, but staying and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions.” |
