Press release
Godzilla is returning to the classics with Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents, a new four-issue line of oversized one-shot comics that drops the King of the Monsters into famous works of literature. The project follows the strong reception of Tom Scioli’s original Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre limited series, which is now available in a collected edition. Scioli says the core idea has always been that “Godzilla has been with us for centuries, maybe millennia, hiding in the fringes of history and literature,” calling it a concept that is “full of possibilities.”
The upcoming release, Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla, reimagines Shakespeare’s tragedy on a kaiju scale, blending feuding families, budding romance, and large-scale destruction in Verona. Artist Sean Peacock says, “It’s such a treat to put my own spin on the King of the Monsters as well as one of The Bard’s most famous plays,” adding that reading Romeo & Juliet in ninth grade English never suggested a future where fair Verona would be “destroyed in a kaiju attack.” A fan of the original Monsterpiece Theatre, Peacock says there is “some really insane stuff in this book” and that the chance to contribute to the follow-up is an honor.
The comic is written by Adam Tierney, who credits Scioli with setting the tone. “Tom Scioli has invented such a unique take on Godzilla,” Tierney says. “It’s an honor to play in that sandbox and also reimagine one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays.” Tierney notes that the project may be the first IDW comic written in iambic pentameter and says the team leaned fully into the concept, adding, “I can’t wait for everyone to see all the craziness we’ve come up with.”
Each one-shot also includes a five-page backup story by Tom Scioli. For the debut issue, that backup pairs Godzilla with another literary icon in Robin Hood and the Monster of Nottingham, giving Sherwood Forest the Monsterpiece Theatre treatment. Scioli describes the backups as the “dessert and coffee” at the end of each issue, explaining that Godzilla Meets Robin Hood and His Merry Band of Outlaws is an ongoing feature made up of “self-contained minisodes” that combine into a larger epic. “I’ve been working really hard on it,” Scioli says. “Get ready to explore exciting new and old territory Godzilla’s never gone before.”
Editor Jake Williams says the original Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre left an immediate impression. “When I first read the script, I had a smile on my face so big and dumb it almost hurt,” Williams says, calling it “an absolute masterpiece of cartooning, comedy, and heart.” Williams adds that comedy comics are often overlooked, but Scioli showed how Godzilla could be used “as a giant force for parody and laughs.” That same reaction returned, Williams says, when reading Tierney’s Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla script and seeing Peacock’s cartooning.
Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla goes on sale April 8, 2026, with pre-orders due by March 2. The issue runs 52 pages and is priced at $7.99 USD.
Check out all four cover variants of the comic and a 5 page preview.
GODZILLA'S MONSTERPIECE THEATRE PRESENTS: ROMEO & JULIET & GODZILLA
The explosive literary mashup series returns! But this time, Godzilla is taking on the classics one story at a time. O Godzilla, Godzilla, wherefore art thou Godzilla? First, it's invading the Bard's most revered play, Romeo & Juliet. Families at war! Forbidden love blossoming! Godzilla on its path of destruction! Fair Verona won't be so fair for long! And that's not all: Tom Scioli is returning to the series to write and illustrate a backup story starring the legendary thief entitled "Robin Hood and the Monster of Nottingham!"

IDW Games Joins the Kai-Sei Era with Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game, And Now It Is Live!!
Kickstarter Launches March 2026; Playtest at PAX Unplugged!
LOS ANGELES, CA (November 3, 2025) – Join G-Force to fight the greatest kaiju of all time when IDW Games releases the first-ever Godzilla Tabletop Roleplaying Game! Launching next March with a Kickstarter campaign, Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game, reunites three Warhammer gaming legends – Jervis Johnson, Mark A. Latham, and Gav Thorpe for their first co-created tabletop game! Godzilla puts a team of players in the midst of kaiju attacks with character sheets, collaboration, and playing cards as their tools to defend humanity. This unique new game system uses standard 52-card decks, rather than dice. Fans can sign up for more information on IDW Games HERE.
“When IDW first approached me about working on a role-playing game system, I was cautious until I found out that the game would be based on their fantastic Godzilla comics — at which point I immediately said "Yes please, count me in!" Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game is the first time I've had a chance to help design a fully-fledged RPG, and doing so with Gav and Mark and the IDW creative team has been a fantastic experience. I am really pleased with the way that the game system has come together, especially the way that using cards instead of dice has allowed us to include a number of novel game mechanics in the game system,” shares co-creator Jervis Johnson (Warhammer). “I've had a soft-spot for Godzilla ever since I was about eight years old and my mum took me to see Son of Godzilla. I liked it so much I made her stay at the cinema so I could watch the film a second time! As you can imagine, this means that getting to work on the Godzilla roleplaying game is a childhood dream come true for me.”
“Working on a Godzilla RPG is something of a dream come true – and the fact that I get to team up with Jervis Johnson and Gav Thorpe again feels like getting the band back Together!” says co-creator Mark A. Latham (Warhammer, The Walking Dead, Harry Potter). “It’s really exciting to have total freedom in developing a new system: something that really fits with the G-Force era of Godzilla stories, and truly encourages immersive storytelling and character-driven narrative. I think players and DMs alike are going to be very surprised by this game.”
“As a fan of RPGs over four decades it’s a privilege to work on a setting as iconic as Godzilla — one of the most recognisable characters worldwide! It’s been a great experience working with Jervis and Mark to bring to life our ideas for the IDW roleplaying system, and the Godzilla game, says co-creator Gav Thorpe(Warhammer, Inquisitor). “It’s not often that, as a designer, one gets the opportunity to build something completely from the ground up. It’s our intent to make something foundational that adds to the canon of game systems but more importantly is fun, intuitive and rewards player teamwork.”
The Godzilla RPG Kickstarter campaign will be a 30-day pledge launching early 2026, and will feature limited edition tiers with expected fulfillment by fall 2026.
IDW Games will host Playtests at PAX Unplugged (November 21-23, 2025) in Philadelphia. Players who participate will receive exclusive player previews and merchandise. IDW Games will also have a selection of the Godzilla RPG merchandise exclusively available at PAX, including Beanies, Playmats, Notebooks, Pins, Koozies, Playing Cards, Totes, and more.
Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game is the first new release from IDW Games in more than 5 years with plans for other licensed properties to expand their game line. Recently Hunters Entertainment announced the Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees - A Storytelling Game Kickstarter campaign meeting their initial goal in less than 72 hours. Backers can still sign up for the campaign and its exclusive products. IDW Games plan to continue future game development via Kickstarter giving brand-devoted fans an opportunity to have something exclusive.
