Synopsis for "The Last Hope"
While Viras attacks Paris, Greta Karbone successfully takes control of Gamera's mind, and uses the monster to defend Viras by having it fly into oncoming fire. She does this to prevent damage to Viras for long enough to allow mankind to surrender to the monster. Aboard Freena's ship, Mayumi Nagamine noted that Gamera would not act against humanity of its own accord, and she thus theorized that there must be something wrong. Freena looks into this, and discovers an energy trail flowing between Gamera and the Eiffel Tower. On closer investigation, the group notices that on top of the tower, Karbone and Gusano are there. Nagamine then asks Freena to teleport her to them, and neither she nor Lutz try to argue, however the engine damage they had sustained had caused damage to the teleporter as well, and she is sent just below Gusano in mid air. However, Gusano catches her and asks why he should not drop her. Due to the overheating problem, Freena is forced to leave Lutz at the controls of her ship while she goes to repair the engine. With her feeding him directions, he fires an anesthetic at Viras, but misses and puts a military garrison to sleep. Because of the risk Viras presents to the ship, Freena advises Lutz to return to the Tower, as if Viras' friends were stationed there, they would be safe. Recalling Nagamine's earlier trickery, Gusano is hesitant to comply, but when she tells him to notice the change in Greta. He reveals that he suspects she is brainwashed by Viras, but Nagamine points out that Viras does not care for her the way he does, and will discard or destroy her when she is no longer necessary. With this in mind, Gusano climbs up to Greta and tears the Atlantean Magatama with which she controlled Gamera from her neck and throwing it to the ground. Obsessed with the power, Karbone jumps from the tower. Filled with regret over losing his lover, Gusano leaps from the tower as well, and lands in the open repair hatch on Freena's ship. This caused the thrusters to suddenly engage at full power, and out of Lutz's control. The ship crashes, and as Lutz searches for an exit, he sees Gamera on a viewscreen turning to attack Viras, however it is electrocuted and downed. Freena then contacts Lutz over the radio and tells him that the main reactor is about to explode. She says goodbye before noticing that something else is amiss. Gusano then lifts the reactor over his head and leaves the wreckage to throw the machine at Gamera, noticing that it needs the flame to live, as he needed Greta. The ensuing explosion takes his life, but rouses Gamera, who then slams Viras with a building before taking one of its tentacles in its mouth and flinging it across the city. Viras is then impaled on a steeple of the Cathedral of Notre Dame. When Lutz is pulled from the wreckage, Gamera is already flying away. Freena disappeared, but could hide in the world of weird fashions that Paris presented forever. Karbone's body is never found. Mayumi is able to arrange for Lutz's release, and expresses his plan to return to his dog in Guanajota, however as they walk, Lutz finds Asagi's amulet on the ground and knew what to do next. Original Solicitation Gamera is supposed to be the Guardian of the Universe, not the protector of life-threatening monsters! So why is he helping a gigantic squid destroy all of Paris? Has the original mutant turtle taken a turn for the worse? Find out in the final issue of this four-issue miniseries! It's giant monster action as you demanded it!

Synopsis for "Up from the Deep!"
With Gamera down for the count, Lutz runs away from Zigra's carnage, only to discover that Asagi was on board. He quickly tries to return her amulet, but finds that it has broken. She then informs him that because the amulet was broken, Gamera is dead, and so he has doomed the entire human race. Zigra then hits them both with his Tri-Color Beam and they are incinerated. Lutz then awakes stripped naked in his cell in Paris, France, where he had been taken by the French Navy three weeks prior. Deep in the ocean, Greta Karbone's obsession only grows as she dismantles the miniature submarine's air filters to create a device with which to control Gamera, while Gusano wishes they will return to the surface soon so as to look after their grooming and hygiene. Karbone, on the other hand, is only concerned with the now fully-grown Viras, the final stage of technical evolution, becoming the supreme being and enslaving the human race without Gamera getting in the way. Gusano voices concern over her obsession with Viras, but she rejects him, saying that her life is trivial, and she has devoted herself entirely to the service of Viras, through whose connected mind she has become aware of frequencies tangible only to Supermonsters, which allowed her to create her control device, the conductor for which, could be found in Paris. Lutz is roused from his nightmares yet again by a swarm of news crews before a guard informs him that he has a visitor. When he arrives in the visitation room, he discovers that is is Dr. Mayumi Nagamine, a representative of the United Nations Supermonster Task Force. Recognizing Mayumi's name, he inquires about Asagi, and jokes about his disbelief that she could communicate with Gamera. Nagamine then informs him that Gusano and Karbone had created Supermonsters with stolen materials, and reveals that there was suspicion the monster that had attacked the ship had been one of theirs. Lutz then recounts what happened after Gamera went under the water. After he sank, a nearby submarine fired on it, effectively waking it up. Gamera then flew at incredible speed into the air, where it caught Zigra off guard and biting its neck. Gamera then used its rocket feet to fly out to the Pacific Ring of Fire, and dropped the wounded monster into a volcano west of Java before disappearing again. However unknown to anyone, just as that occurred, an alien visitor noted Zigra's death and was greatly upset. with his story over, Lutz asks to be set free, which Nagamine lacks the authority to do. Lutz then offers to trade Asagi's amulet for his freedom, when the guard in the room strikes Lutz and takes it. Lutz tries to tackle him, but is knocked back on top of Nagamine. Shortly thereafter, they are teleported aboard the alien's spaceship. The alien introduces herself as Freena, a biological weapon retrieval specialist before admitting that she had only meant to grab Dr. Nagamine for her expertise in Supermonsters. She reveals that a Bio-Weapon from her home planet of Broomark escaped and had taken refuge on the Earth when nuclear tests had scared it. Seeing as Zigra had been killed, and Freena could not go home empty-handed, she asks Nagamine if there are any other giant monsters they want gone instead. Before Nagamine can respond, their ship is hit. Freena then uncloaks it to activate the sensors, and they see Viras attacking the city. Freena claims she can take it back to her client, just as Lutz notices Gamera flying in. However, it intercepts a missile sent toward Viras, which leads Nagamine to question if Gamera is helping Viras, when Freena declares that there has been massive engine damage, and that the ship is overheating. While scaling the Eiffel Tower, Karbone proclaims that the Magatama is the perfect conductor, and that she will control Gamera to give its life for Viras, to allow it to take over humanity. Original Solicitation Dr. Greta Karbone has succeeded in creating her very own supermonster -- the giant squid-beast Viras. But Karbone learns that what you create you cannot always control, as Viras takes over the doctor's mind. It's all part of a monstrous plan to enslave humanity -- a plan that begins in Paris, where Viras must dispose of mankind's bio-engineered guardian Gamera, the giant flying turtle! The City of Lights is about to become a city in flames!
Synopsis for "Wreckoning"
Regretting his decision to leave Asagi behind, Lutz runs into the burning Guanajota, where he finds her on the ground. He supports her as they make their way toward the fight between Gamera and the cloned Gyaos. As they watch the battle. Asagi sees an tanker ship sitting in Guanajota Harbor, where the Supermonsters are battling, and grasps her Atlantean Magatama to send Gamera a message. The monster understands, and tackles Gyaos into the tanker before flying upwards and blasting the beast and the ship with its Flame Breath. The ensuing inferno engulfs Gyaos and it burns to death. The mental strain leaves Asagi in a sorry state, and Lutz drops her at a clinic and takes her amulet, reasoning that it was too much responsibility and power for a kid like Asagi to handle, and that it should be in the hands of an adult. As Gamera flies out over the Pacific Ocean, Gusano follows in his sputtering plane. On Karbone's island, the reluctant Gusano tries to persuade Nagamine into cooperating. Before she can respond, Karbone enters with the news that Gamera had destroyed Gyaos, and claims that because of this there was no harm done. Nagamine bitterly retorts that Karbone is responsible for all of the damage and loss of life she caused. Karbone reminds her that her proposition involved creating controllable monsters, however this did not sway her. Karbone storms out, and while Gusano's back is turned, Mayumi opens an oxygen tank, and distracts him by asking how he had met Karbone. He explains that he had been a black-market trader who had discovered Karbone in a bar and immediately fell in love. After that, he quit the black market and helped to build her laboratory, however he notes that during the experimentation she changed drastically. She had become obsessed with the monster she had called Viras, and it is revealed that Viras had taken over her mind unbeknownst to her and Gusano. Nagamine then claims that she feels sorry for Gusano, and that she will join them to give Karbone more time to spend with him. He thanks her heartily and turns to call for Karbone, but Nagamine swipes his flare gun and fires a shot that reacts with the extra oxygen and explodes. Gusano searches for Karbone in the blaze, and she belittles him before ordering him to save Viras and abandon the other monsters. On their way to their mini-sub, Gusano apologizes for ruining their work, but Karbone tells him that is nonsense as they had saved Viras: the only thing that mattered. Over the Pacific Ocean, Lutz runs out of gas. As his plane begins to sink, he attempts to summon Gamera with the Magatama, but begins to drown. When he awakes, he finds himself resuscitated by a member of the French Navy, who puts him under arrest for attempting to disrupt nuclear testing, and puts him in a cell with two environmental activists they had caught. However, after the bomb detonates, the French spy something approaching them incredibly fast on the radar, and Zigra, which they had awoken with their test attacks them. With the brig punctured, Lutz is able to escape, and even though the amulet is inactive, Gamera arrives. Lutz cheers, but Zigra blasts it with a ray, and Gamera begins to sink into the ocean unconscious. All the while, an alien spaceship approaches the Earth. Original Solicitation "Gamera's got his giant-turtle hands full dealing with the flying terror called Gyaos! But he'll have to free up a foot or two, 'cause a new player just entered the game: the alien shark creature Zigra! You have to expect days like this when you take on the title "Guardian of the Universe," and you have to be ready to come out fighting!
Synopsis for "The Shadow of Evil - Gyaos!"
One year after the battle between Gamera and Super Gyaos, in Guanajota Harbor in Mexico, island tour pilot Lutz attempts to attach a fake head to his dog to get extra cash in a new "freak show" attraction he is adding to his business. He is then approached by Asagi Kusanagi, who had come to see the monster, but in recompense for the monster attraction falling through he offers to give her a seaplane ride instead. During the flight, Kusanagi reveals that she is in Mexico with her friend Mayumi Nagamine, who had been summoned by Patty Smith to a private island, and Asagi had not been allowed to accompany her. After arriving on Smith's island, Nagamine, Smith, and her bodyguard Gusano begin their search for the Emerald-Crested Dapplinger, a bird thought to be long extinct that she claimed to have sighted, and the reason that ornithologist Nagamine was summoned to the island. While peering through her binoculars, sees the distant sillouette of Gyaos, the notion of whose return she dismisses before coming across its droppings. Because of Super Gyaos having been killed and had its remains sealed in Tokyo laboratories, she deduces that the Gyaos of Mexico must be another member of the Gyaos species. As she explains Gyaos' origins to Smith, Gyaos rises from the water out of their view and devours a fisherman. While flying with Lutz, in answer to his query about her curiosity for monsters, Asagi explains her connection to Gamera, which Lutz politely listens to while not believing a word of it. After her story concludes, the Magatama amulet around Asagi's neck begins to glow, and she insists that Gamera is calling her. As Gyaos descends on the city of Guanajota, Smith reveals to Nagamine that they had genetically engineered Gyaos, who had escaped its jar, alongside three other monsters, and that she is not Patty Smith, but biologist Greta Karbone, who, with the help of Gusano had obtained a sample of Super Gyaos' DNA and crafted their own Supermonsters with it. She then invites Nagamine to join her and help her to control them. After noticing a fire on the shore, Lutz feels turbulence before Gamera flies by his rickety seaplane. Through his disbelief, Lutz becomes concerned, when after Gamera receives a blow from Gyaos, that wounds instantaneously appear on Asagi's face. Instead of flying toward the fight as she requests, Lutz lands the plane and kicks Asagi out, fearing that she was attracting the monsters, and so she tries her best to run against the crowd toward Gamera. Original Solicitation "When giant monsters threaten to destroy your family, when natural disasters endanger your home, there's one big turtle who's watching your back! He's Gamera, the guardian of the universe, and he's returned to save Mexico from the awesome power of the bio-engineered bird-monster known as Gyaos! There's a battle of the behemoths brewing south of the border, and the repercussions are gonna be felt across North and South America! Trivia The issue concludes with a brief description of the Showa Gamera series, along with a synopsis of Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, which had not yet been released in the United States. |
