About Music Box
CHICAGO’S VENUE FOR INDEPENDENT, FOREIGN, CULT AND CLASSIC FILMS
Turn onto Southport Avenue and it’s hard to resist the neon beacon that lures cinephiles from across Chicagoland with eight flickering letters—Music Box. It’s a promise of more than just entertainment, but a total experience. It’s a community of strangers coming together over the anticipation of that familiar red velvet curtain rising toward the twinkling, star-covered ceiling. It’s a symbol of Chicago’s go-to venue for independent, foreign, cult, and classic films.

Walk by the ticket window and step back in time to when the ‘20s were still roaring and the theatre first opened—just two months before The Great Depression—on August 22, 1929. It was a time before fluorescent lighting, megaplexes, and artificial butter. And although our ticket prices have changed slightly over the past 90 or so years, the butter on our popcorn is still real.

Each of our theatre’s 700 seats has a story to tell. The stories are more colorful than the decades of films projected here; of first dates that took place under the starry sky; of family traditions revolving around the annual White Christmas singalong; of the ghost some say haunts the theatre to this day. Join us, and make a few memories of your own. It’s certain to be an experience as unforgettable as the film itself.

The Music Box Theatre is independently owned and operated by the Southport Music Box Corporation. SMBC, through its Music Box Films division, also distributes foreign and independent films in the theatrical, DVD and television markets throughout the United States.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters - Celebrating the Birth of a Kaiju Legend
Picture
GODZILLA
Saturday, November 4th at 7 PM
$15 Public | $10 Members
A thrilling spectacle that continues to be a cult phenomenon, Godzilla is the roaring granddaddy of all monster movies. It’s also a remarkably humane and melancholy drama, made in Japan at a time when the country was reeling from nuclear attack and H-bomb testing in the Pacific. Its rampaging radioactive beast, the poignant embodiment of an entire population’s fears, became a beloved international icon of destruction, spawning almost thirty sequels. (Japan, 1954, 96 mins, Japanese with English Subtitles | Dir. Ishirô Honda)
Picture
MOTHRA VS GODZILLA
Sunday, November 5th at 7 PM
$15 Public | $10 Members
Godzilla faces off against the benevolent insect monster-god Mothra in this clash of the titans, a crossover battle between two of Toho Studios’ most popular monsters—the last in which Godzilla would figure as a malevolent villain rather than a fearsome hero. Mothra vs. Godzilla marks a creative high point in the Godzilla series, with pointed social commentary from director Ishiro Honda, a masterful score by Akira Ifukube, and astonishing special-effects work by Eiji Tsuburaya. (Japan, 1964, 89 mins, Japanese with English Subtitles | Dir. Ishirô Honda)
Picture
GHIDORAH, THE THREE-HEADED MONSTER
Monday, November 6th at 7:30 PM
$15 Public | $10 Members
After laying waste to an alien civilization on Venus, the three-headed, lightning-emitting space monster Ghidorah brings its insatiable thirst for destruction to Earth, where fierce foes Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra must join forces in order to deal with the unprecedented threat. An electrifying screen debut for Godzilla’s archenemy Ghidorah, this film also marks a turning point for the series, as the first time the King of the Monsters acts to protect the planet. (Japan, 1964, 93 mins, Japanese with English Subtitles | Dir. Ishirô Honda)
Picture
DESTROY ALL MONSTERS
Tuesday, November 7th at 7:30 PM
$15 Public | $10 Members
The original Godzilla team of director Ishiro Honda, special-effects supervisor Eiji Tsuburaya, and composer Akira Ifukube reunited for this kaiju extravaganza, which features no fewer than eleven monsters. Set in the remote future of 1999, when the people of Earth have achieved world peace by confining destructive creatures to Monsterland (until an alien race intervenes), Destroy All Monsters mounts a thrilling display of innovative action sequences and memorable images that have made it a favorite for generations of viewers. (Japan, 1968, 89 mins Japanese with English Subtitles | Dir. Ishirô Honda & Jun Fukuda)

Press release,
Showa Godzilla Weekend – June 2023
Head for the hills, because Showa Godzilla Weekend is stomping into town this June, co-presented by Creature Bazaar, Atomic Arts & Music, and Mission Control! We all know and love the big radioactive lizard (his movies have even been featured on our blog before), but not everybody’s had the chance to see the movies that made him a star around the world on the big screen. To that end, The Frida is screening all 15 films from the original Showa era of Godzilla over the course of one weekend. Featuring everything from the grim black and white 1954 original to the colorfully wacky entries of the 70s, it’s a series only fit for a king – a King of the Monsters, that is!

Tickets are standard (and matinee when applicable) prices, but we are adding the opportunity to buy day and full festival passes:
  • Friday Festival Passes are $30 for all 4 films!
  • Saturday Festival Passes are $25 for all 3 films!
  • Sunday Festival Passes are $30 for all 4 films!
  • A Full Festival Pass is $99 for 15 films across 5 days!

Godzilla (Subtitled) – Jun 16
Directed by Ishiro Honda | 1954
Japan, forced into economic and social panic after several ships sink near Odo Island, sends an expedition to the island led by Dr. Yamane. Soon discovering something far more devastating, awaking and surfacing from the sea appears a 50 meter tall monster, whom the natives call Gojira. The monster begins a citywide rampage, threatening to destroy not only Japan, but the rest of the world as well.

Godzilla Raids Again (Subtitled) – Jun 16
Directed by Motoyoshi Oda | 1955
Following the destruction of Godzilla, two fishing scout pilots discover not only a new version of the creature, but a new monster named Anguirus, aka Godzilla’s long-lost foe. Gone is the weapon that killed the original, as authorities attempt to lure danger away from the mainland. But Godzilla and Anguirus soon arrive, resparking an ancient rift as the two monsters make their way towards Osaka for a battle of the ages.

Mothra vs. Godzilla (Subtitled) – Jun 16
Directed by Ishirō Honda | 1964
Ichiro Sakai and Junko are journalists covering the wreckage of a typhoon when an enormous egg is soon found and claimed by greedy entrepreneurs. This prompts the arrival of tiny twin fairies named the Shobijin to plea for its return. When their requests are denied, Godzilla arises near Nagoya, and the people of Infant Island must decide if they are willing to answer Japan’s own pleas for help as monster warfare begins to wage.

Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster (Subtitled) – Jun 16
Directed by Ishirō Honda | 1964
When a meteor lands in Kurobe Valley, detective Shindo is assigned to protect Princess Salno. Soon she emerges under the guise of a Venusian prophetess, whose warnings of the alien-dragon King Ghidorah catches the attention of journalist Naoko and Mothra’s fairies. It is only up to Mothra to convince Godzilla and Rodan to set aside their grudge on humanity or dare to face Ghidorah alone.

Invasion of Astro-Monster (Dubbed) – Jun 17
Directed by Ishirō Honda | 1965
Glenn and Fuji are astronauts who are investigating Planet X, soon encountering the mysterious Xiliens, who ask Earth’s people to help save their world from “Monster Zero” (aka King Ghidorah). In exchange for borrowing Godzilla and Rodan, the Xiliens offer a cure for cancer, to which Glenn makes an attempt to uncover the Xilien’s true intentions.

Ebirah: Horror of the Deep (Subtitled) – Jun 17
Directed by Jun Fukuda | 1966
Ryota, on the search for his missing brother, stows away on a boat belonging to a criminal alongside two other teenagers. Shipwrecking on Letchi island, the group discovers that the natives of Infant Island have been enslaved by a terrorist organization controlling a crustacean monster with the name Ebirah. The only way to defeat the terrorists and liberate the natives is to awaken the fury of Godzilla.

TOHO INTERNATIONAL, INC. CELEBRATES POP-CULTURE ICON GODZILLA’S 67th BIRTHDAY NOV. 3 WITH MONSTER-SIZED EVENTS
WORLD PREMIERE 4K REMASTERED VERSION OF CLASSIC 1954 “GODZILLA” SHOWING AT ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE CINEMA
MONDO RELEASES NEW COLLECTIBLES FOR “GODZILLA WEEK”

LOS ANGELES – October 6, 2021 – Toho International, Inc. is proud to announce a series of one-of-a-kind experiences fit for the King of Monsters to celebrate its 67th birthday. Godzilla’s long history continues to shape worldwide pop culture and festivities this year aimed to engage fans new and old to roll out beginning Nov. 3, the date the first film premiered in 1954.

Austin-based movie theater company Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, in association with Janus Films, will exclusively host a coast-to-coast world premiere of the long-anticipated 4K remastering of the classic 1954 “Godzilla” film. The screenings will be held at over two dozen locations across the U.S. including flagship theaters in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco and will mark 67 years since Godzilla’s first appearance in Toho’s “Gojira,” the classic monster movie widely regarded as a masterpiece that continues to shape the course of worldwide pop culture. In addition, throughout the first half of November, Alamo Drafthouse will screen fan-favorite kaiju classics “Godzilla vs. Hedorah,” “Shin Godzilla,” and a double feature of two Heisei era classics that have never been shown theatrically in North America.

To keep the birthday buzz going, Toho Int. has teamed up with Mondo, Super7, Kinokuniya, and the official Godzilla Shop on Amazon to offer fans exciting new Godzilla merchandise. Fans can also tune in to Toho’s Official Godzilla YouTube Channel for all-new content, including the 1978 “Godzilla” animated series, “Godziban” puppet show, and new original “Godzilla Chomp” documentary series premiering soon.

Alamo Drafthouse Godzilla Film Screenings
On Godzilla’s birthday, November 3, Alamo Drafthouse locations from coast-to-coast will exclusively premiere the long-anticipated 4K restoration of “Godzilla.” The newly-restored film has not yet screened in Japan or the U.S., making the November 3rd screenings a worldwide premiere.

From November 5-11, the Godzilla birthday festivities continue at select Alamo Drafthouse locations with a 50th anniversary screening of one of Godzilla’s strangest adventures ever, “Godzilla vs. Hedorah,” as well as 2016’s critically-acclaimed “Shin Godzilla.” Then, beginning the week of November 12th, select Alamo Drafthouse locations will present a must-see double feature spectacular – two classics of the Heisei era never before seen in American cinemas:

• 1984’s “The Return of Godzilla,” the kickoff to the Heisei era and a direct sequel to “Gojira,” which was heavily re-edited and released in the United States as “Godzilla 1985.” The release of the original Japanese version has never been officially screened on U.S. grounds.
• 1989’s “Godzilla vs. Biollante,” which only received a direct-to-video release in the U.S. has never received an official release in American theaters.
“Godzilla continues its reign as King of the Monsters, transcending mere entertainment icons and embodying emotions and social issues reflective of the times,” said Keiji Ota, Chief Godzilla Officer. “It is timely that we introduce the world to this first 4K version of the original Godzilla film to honor the legacy of this globally recognized symbol to the strongest fanbase in the world.”

“Toho’s enduring cast of kaiju creations have been lighting up Alamo Drafthouse screens for almost 25 years, so we were honored to help plan Godzilla’s birthday party,” says John Smith, Senior Film Programmer for Alamo Drafthouse. “It’s been a thrill to partner with Toho on the 4K premiere and our Happy Birthday, Godzilla deep dive into some of the best work that Toho has ever produced.”

Tickets for all films can be purchased at www.drafthouse.com and participating Alamo Drafthouse theaters starting Wednesday, October 6. For a complete list of theater locations, dates and timing, visit the Alamo Drafthouse website (participating theaters are subject to change).
